I'm doing a summer stock production of Starmites in NJ and need so info. I've never heard of the show. What is it about? What is the music like? Is it good?

its about a girl, loves comic books and stuff, who goes to sleep and has this wacky fantasy of being on another planet with the starmites who are these good guys (space punks) and theyve gotta deal with this bad guy (shak graa) and bad girl (diva) and when she wakes up its like woah was that real or not. thats like the readers digest version. :)

i want my cruelty backkkkkkkkkk...

here's a good website (if i did it right) with info on most of the shows near and dear to my heart. Of course, STARMITES is not on it, sorry. But it's good to know about, put it in your favorites. The score is fairly standard pop-rock, with one number (i think called "Diva") that gets lifted out a lot.

Jim Steinman's college friend Barry Keating wrote the score and the lyrics. I had the 'honour' of speaking with him on some occasions, and he actually wrote a piece with Jim called Rhinegold (played at the Mercer Arts Center and Playwrights' Horizons in '74). I have numerous 'links' to this Keating, but I've never really heard the score all the way through. Lyrically, he stole the title of the song MILADY from Fox and Steinman's Confidence Man musical, and his mention of the word Obsidian was taken from Steinman's Obsidian Productions, and previously the name of the city in his futuristic Neverland musical. I'd give this one a chance - purely on the merit it got a few Tony nominations. Unfortunately, Keating has been stuck on this one for decades, and I just wish he'd get on with his life and write something else (and preferably with Steinman)

don't put too much stock in those Tony noms, it was a notoriously weak season. i never saw the show in NYC though, only regionally. It has some good stuff, and fun characters, could have terrific visuals; but maybe NOT in most summer stock venues.

I'm sorry, but I have to be cruel here. It's one of the most extraordinarily piss-poor musicals ever to "grace" the Broadway stage, right up there with HER FIRST ROMAN and ROCKABYE HAMLET.

Good luck. You're gonna need it.

The very talented Jason Wooten was also in Starmites.

"I'm learning to dig deep down inside and find the truth within myself and put that out. I think what we identify with in popular music more than anything else is when someone just shares a truth that we can relate to. That's what I'm searching for in my music." - Ron Bohmer
