One of my very favorite films and I even saw the original production at the Lucille Lortel many years ago. What a lovely story.
I have to admit that this cast is what really drew me back to this piece. It's just amazing that they were able to gather such wonderful, seasoned pro and a few that are fresh to the stage.
Mind you, the show is NOT without flaws. I know the film by heart and heart many lines that were either dropped or 'mixed up' in the presentation. But that didn't bother me. I think the emotion is what stand at the heart of it all.
Go see it ... I think I'm going back after it opens. I want to see how well they've grown into these roles.

Gosh, I really want to see this show. It looks so powerful and emotional - you can't beat fabulous onstage chemistry and I think these girls have got lots of it...

Posted: 3/20/05 at 8:41amWait a minute...they changed the movie? So now it has some sincere emotions and not that crappy Hallmark card sentiment that was slopped on the big screen? Well, maybe the play might be okay after all.

I went into the city to see the matinee performance on sat. 19th. Being a huge fan of the movie, I was worried that I would have trouble forgetting the performances from the starry movie cast, and let the performers on the stage make it their own. Unfortunately, for the most part, thats exactly what happened for me. With the exception of Frances Sternhagen and Lily Rabe, it was difficult not to compare the other performances with the women in the movie.
I love Delta Burke, and wanted to see her in Millie, but i disliked that show so much, I couldn't return just to see her. So I was more than happy to see her in SM. I realize that they havent been performing the show for very long, so that may be one of the problems and they are still getting their "footing," but in the first 20 minutes of the play Delta Burke quite obviously flubbed 3 lines. And it seemed to me that she was always "searching" for what her next lines were going to be. I will say that she was funny and much better in the second act, perhaps she needs more time with it.
Delta Burke wasn't the only one to flub lines however, Christine Ebersol flubbed a line..as did Frances Sterhagen which makes me think that perhaps its just such a wordy play with so many people talking that it can be difficult to keep up. I imagine that with some time, they will get into the flow of the play. The rest of the cast was good, but again, hard to seperate from the films cast. Although I was surprised by Rebecca Gayheart. I thought she did a very nice job up there with all that talent. She seemed to hold her own. And the audience in the theater yesterday seemed to really have a great time.

COMPLETELY UNTRUE. Can't you read? I am NOT the only one who had a problem with this MESS of a show.

hold on a sec... what's wrong with me being honest & throwing some jokes in along the way?
it was really a let down. As it clearly was for at least a few others -- what's wrong with me warning others who INCORRECTLY think "everybody...has raved so far"?
If you actually go back & read most of my posts you'll see I really DO hope the show & cast improves...

Posted: 3/20/05 at 11:57amWell...for the most part, the way this board works - the love for this show has FAR outweighed the Disliking of it. And that is saying a lot.

Are you talking about the play itself? The movie? or THIS particular production? Because I've searched back & haven't found THAT many comments about the show (it ONLY began previews THIS WEEK) and while there have been a few positive postings, there's also been negative (and not just from me!)... so what exactly are you referring to?
I never said the PLAY is poorly written -- I am just saying the Wednesday March 16th 8pm preview was a bit of a mess.

No need to be a bitch. Even though that's pretty much what you seem to be.
And obviously I didn't go today, but I'll go soon.
