Scaryclowns, That would make sense, given that Stew is really a musician first and Passing Strange is almost wall-to-wall music.

I don't see what the big deal is.

It seems like PASSING STRANGE haters do their best to get their panties in a twist over nothing, just because Stew isn't a traditional music theatre artist.

I don't get what the big deal is here, either.

I read the article and I don't think Stew's bashing musical theatre. Go to
http://www.metoperafamily.org/operanews/issue/article.aspx?id=4980&issueID=325 and read the article and the comments by Stephen Schwartz, Adam Guettel, Jason Robert Brown, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Michael John LaChiusa, Stephen Flaherty and Stew.

I was going to post the link to the article, too, in a new thread before happening upon this one. Thank you for posting, A Director. It is a very interesting and enjoyable article. (I, for one, cannot wait for the LaChiusa adaptation of Carmen...and for Audra McDonald? An absolute dream.)

Don't keep preying on him like rabid vultures. He's outta here. Congrats.

Oh, that horrible horrible black man! How dare he criticize our perfect musical theatre!

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

I agree with Stew. Music is not the most important thing in Broadway today, not by a long shot. How many musicals would people see if they were sung in German or Italian? Why is the sound of the orchestra always so muted on Broadway? How come there is no discussion of conductors or musicians on this board? It's all about the lyrics on Broadway, and in opera it's much more about the music.
