Just finished listening to my new copy of this terrific S.T.A.G.E. benefit recording when I should have revising for my political economy exam..oops!
Anyway its a great release from the new Kritzerland label and worth investing in if you like the above composers or just fancy something different. Like the other benefits in this series there are a selection of Broadway performers familiar and not-so familiar to me. Its a live recording but Bruce Kimmel has done a good job cleaning it up and making it sound fab.
Highlights that stand out for me after the first listening are Billy Porter's funky "Magic to Do", a lesser known song from Dance a Little Closer "There's Never Been Anything Like Us" featuring Lee Lessack, David Burnham's "Lion Tamer and Rob Cuccioli singing without that horrible J+H voice in "Morning Glow"
Oh and did I mention Andrea Martin's hilarious 8 min plus "No Time At All"? She has some interesting adlibs and audience participation. Its great to hear some of the Arthur Schwartz songs with new interpretations. If only they had recorded some of Barbara Cook's glorious numbers from The Gay Life. Ah well you cant have everything!
Where can I find this CD?
Or as I am in the UK I found it easier to get it from cdbaby. They even remove the case and charge less postage to avoid customs...bargain!
Only one song from Godspell and it's part of a medley?
BOOOOO!
Its a very good medley though. Jennifer Leigh Warren belts the heck out of it. If you can support the new label as there are other concerts to be released and some of the money does go to charity.
