How do regular (non standing room only or lottery) student rush tickets work? Are they available for any open seat in the house or only specific ones? Can you get cancelled tickets for student rush prices?
It depends on the show...and no, you can't get cancelled tickets for a student price.

Some shows have specific seats set aside for student rush, and others just give you whatever seats haven't sold. Generally, if a show isn't selling well you'll get better seats. And since plenty of good shows don't sell very well, it's a pretty good deal over all.

Most show do have specific seats set aside for students. Very often it's the front row, occasionally its in the mezz. If the show is faiorly empty they may bump you to a better seat to be nice. And you can always move if there are a lot of empty seats. Some shows (Rent is the only one I can think of offhand) will sell you the best available seats at a discount with a student ID. But there it costs $40 as opposed to the usual $25-$30. The link that Plum provided is the best resource I've seen for the various rush policies.
