Wouldn't it be swell if there were studio recordings made of the Tony-nominated shows which never got a recording at the time? It just seems a real shame that a part of our musical theatre heritage remains unknown to so many, and really, if a show was worthy of getting nominated for the Best Musical of the Year, then I think it deserves a CD release.

By my count, pretty much every Tony-nominated show has been released on CD in some form or another, with the following gaping holes:

1959 - La Plume De Ma Tante
1972 - Ain't Supposed to Die A Natural Death (OBC on LP however)
1973 - Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope (OBC on LP)
1975 - The Lieutenant
1978 - Dancin'
1983 - Merlin
1985 - Quilters
1985 - Leader of the Pack (OBC on LP)
1986 - Big Deal
1994 - Cyrano
1996 - Chronicle of a Death Foretold
2000 - James Joyce's The Dead

That leaves 12 Tony-nominated musicals yet to see release on CD, (and this is assuming that 1968's "Illya Darling" does indeed get released later this month.)

Is it too much of a pie-in-the-sky hope that studio recordings could be done by Ghostlight or someone?

I would TOTALLY love this to happen.

That said, there's a big difference between a show not released on CD- only on LP, and one without a recording at all.

Still, I'd love a Leader of the Pack CD. Also, to add, I don't think there's a Juan Darien recording.

[title of show] on Broadway. it's time. believe.

There IS a professional recording of The Dead, but it's of a regional company, not the OBC; it was a limited edition, and unfortunately was way out of my price range.

Aren't you in luck.....

And I did hear about the "James Joyce's The Dead" recording, but for some reason they limited the number of copies and it never made it to the usual retail outlets. Such a shame that one wasn't released, as recent as it was.

I must confess to being really intrigued by "La Plume de ma Tante", as I know virtually nothing about it. Updated On: 4/21/08 at 12:06 AM
