Sorry to clutter the board with yet another audition song thread--this is my first.
Any suggestions for a 30-ish mezzo/alto1 audition song for Hair? I'm more of an actor who sings, so my "book" is limited. My usual songs are "Sorry, Grateful" from Company and
"Spark of Creation" from Children of Eden. Have also done a Bonnie Raitt song when rock/pop was specified which got a call-back.
They haven't specified broadway or rock/pop.
Maybe something from Full Monty or something else w/ a more rock score? I'm at a loss. Tend to NOT want to do something from the show, 'cause....you know.
Do something that shows you can be free and energetic.

Thanks Bobby. I'm brainstorming.
(And your boyfriend IS a doll )
I would do a pop song. They tend to be less rangy then showtunes and are probably more what the creative team are looking for. You could also sing something from the show like "Air" or "Frank Mills" which are basically character songs, if you feel acting is your strong point.
And if you are 30ish -- dress as young as you can get away with. The OBC was in their late teens/early 20s.

You might want to go with the Bonnie Raitt song since it has worked for you. If they specify Broadway, you might want to think along the lines of "I Don't Know How To Love Him" from Jesus Christ Superstar
Thanks, Michael.
Should probably clarify that I DO sing, but I am an actor who sings vs. a musical theatre actor....so it's more an apprehension about making the right choice vs. the singing itself? Does that make sense? But I like your tip about choosing something more "character"-focused.
(I look younger than I am, but Frank Mills is still too ingenue for me.)
Thanks for the time!
Thanks Goth....not a bad idea re: JCS.
And "Can't make you love me" (the Raitt song) is rather Sheila-esque too. Hmmm.
-sorry for the double-post--

"I Can't Make You Love Me" is one of the greatest songs ever written.
ITA, Bobby. Beautiful and heartbreaking.
Anyone else have any thoughts?
Not that I recommend you do this, but I remember reading that when HAIR was cast originally in NYC, the audition team heard one song so many times, it became something of an inside joke: "Going out of my Head"
