Betty Buckley was the best Norma I saw. Her performance was stunning from beginning to end.

Betty was very good, as was Paige. Patti is still my favorite, though. I think Paige was the best of the Broadway Normas.

Actually, it WON the Tony. But: a) the theatre it was in was HUGE and difficult to fill, b) it was almost like "Boy From Oz" -- when Glenn was out, 1/2 the audience was at the returns line, c) once Glenn left, they had difficulty selling tickets, d) it only won because it was a DISMAL year for new musicals -- Sunset Boulevard was only up against Smokey Joe's Cafe. There even weren't any other best scores in competition with Sunset Boulevard -- it won by default.

I only saw Close's Tony performance, which was dreadful. I saw Betty a couple of times, and then saw Karen Mason. Betty did a great job. Mason couldn't act it, but she sang it so beautifully. I wish she had done the OBCR.

Betty recorded a mini-version when she joined the NY company.

I doubt it's still in print. I'm sure Colony would be happy to sell you a ridiculously overpriced copy, or try Ebay.

Trust me, you are better off with London. Patti's Norma is so vastly superior to Glenn's.

When it comes to singing, Patti is much better than Glenn. Patti is able to sing "With One Look" in the original key.
Performance-wise I prefer Glenn. More emotion there. Just my opionion.
And the U.S.-version is the reworked version of the show, the London production was shut down for a few weeks to incorporate all the changes made for the U.S. version. And the U.S. recording includes much more dialogue than the London version.
So it really comes down to what you're looking for: better singing or better coverage of the show?

Rentboy86, if you are near NYC you might want to check with the Library of Performing Arts and see if they have the video version of it. Tell them that you are doing scholarly work on making movies into musicals.
I think Petula Clarke was the worst Norma. IMO, she played it too girlish and flirty. The ending almost didn't make sense because she didn't build enough for the audience to believe she could go that far.
