re: Sunset Blvd.

Nobody will ever come close to Patti. It is just that simple.

re: Sunset Blvd.

Betty Buckley was the best Norma I saw. Her performance was stunning from beginning to end.

re: Sunset Blvd.

Betty was very good, as was Paige. Patti is still my favorite, though. I think Paige was the best of the Broadway Normas.

re: Sunset Blvd.

Patti LuPone is the best norma in my opinion!

re: Sunset Blvd.

this needs to be revived. when did the show close on broadway?
#31

re: Sunset Blvd.

Mar 22, 1997...so it won't be revived for sometime.

re: Sunset Blvd.

so it lost the tony huh? who won it?
#33

re: Sunset Blvd.

No, it won the Tony.
#34

re: Sunset Blvd.

Actually, it WON the Tony. But: a) the theatre it was in was HUGE and difficult to fill, b) it was almost like "Boy From Oz" -- when Glenn was out, 1/2 the audience was at the returns line, c) once Glenn left, they had difficulty selling tickets, d) it only won because it was a DISMAL year for new musicals -- Sunset Boulevard was only up against Smokey Joe's Cafe. There even weren't any other best scores in competition with Sunset Boulevard -- it won by default.

re: Sunset Blvd.

I only saw Close's Tony performance, which was dreadful. I saw Betty a couple of times, and then saw Karen Mason. Betty did a great job. Mason couldn't act it, but she sang it so beautifully. I wish she had done the OBCR.

re: Sunset Blvd.

Betty recorded a mini-version when she joined the NY company.

re: Sunset Blvd.

I doubt it's still in print. I'm sure Colony would be happy to sell you a ridiculously overpriced copy, or try Ebay.

re: Sunset Blvd.

^^ Betty's CD is only 3 songs though.

re: Sunset Blvd.

Oh nm, i think ill just get the London Cd. I really want a tape of the broadway performance, i just really wanna see the visual. with the sets and all the gaughtyness of it all. I heard some set piece lowered from the ceiling, what part was that?
#46

re: Sunset Blvd.

Trust me, you are better off with London. Patti's Norma is so vastly superior to Glenn's.
#47

re: Sunset Blvd.

When it comes to singing, Patti is much better than Glenn. Patti is able to sing "With One Look" in the original key.

Performance-wise I prefer Glenn. More emotion there. Just my opionion.

And the U.S.-version is the reworked version of the show, the London production was shut down for a few weeks to incorporate all the changes made for the U.S. version. And the U.S. recording includes much more dialogue than the London version.

So it really comes down to what you're looking for: better singing or better coverage of the show?
#48

re: Sunset Blvd.

sorry to disagree glenn was a huge disappointment.
#49

re: Sunset Blvd.

I think i'd prefer the better singing, i mean i've see the movie and stuff so i'm pretty sure i understand the story. How long did Sunset last in London?

re: Sunset Blvd.

Rentboy86, if you are near NYC you might want to check with the Library of Performing Arts and see if they have the video version of it. Tell them that you are doing scholarly work on making movies into musicals.

I think Petula Clarke was the worst Norma. IMO, she played it too girlish and flirty. The ending almost didn't make sense because she didn't build enough for the audience to believe she could go that far.
