Superlover...

Posted: 1/4/05 at 4:02pm...oh God. I quite like Brooklyn (well at least the handful of actual songs on the OBC) but the book bits inbetween are cringey. As is Superlover. Ramona Keller shouldn't have to do that. Bless her. Appraising all these factors, I'd say I do like Brooklyn but see it's crazily flawed too.

The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

Posted: 1/4/05 at 4:04pmI agree. I listened to the OBC recording the other day for the first time, and I was impressed by Ramona's vocal ability, but halfway through the song I just snapped and went, "What the hell IS this?!" and I had to switch to the next song. I did the same thing with all the dialogue. I haven't seen the show, but it seems to me like there's no dramatic action at all. There's essentially no plot. It's just stating the obvious over and over again.

I saw Brooklyn and (so sue me) really enjoyed myself. I remember "Superlover" being far more influential in person rather than on the OBCR; I remember thinking, "Damn right, Paradice! Preach it!" But I think it was all the moment. 'Cuz listening to it on the OBCR, I skip it when it gets to the preachy part.
But "Love Me Where I Live"? Love it! Ramona Keller is phenominal.

Superlover is different, that's why I like it. It's not what you typically find on Broadway, yet, you just need to kickback and enjoy it and have fun with it...it's not suppose to that "Webber"
guy...it's just simple fun

As I remember...superlover had nothing to do with plot... All it does is introduce Paradice as a singer.... just an piece of entertainment showing she is a Diva....... and I actually thought it was quite funny.... seducing super heros...
HELL WHY NOT?
The main flaw with BROOKLYN is not in the little "side walk fairy tale" after all it is supposed to be written by these street performers...it can have all the flaws that any unprofessional (and sometimes professional) writer might make.
Where BROOKLYN fails is in establishing who the street performers are...and giving them an emotional arc. To choose to have these street performers tell the story is a major dramaturgical choice...and it is not thought out
Basic questions... who are these people?...why are they telling this story?...and why is this particular performance more inportant to watch than any other night they are performing on the street?... ie) is there someone special in the audience? is there a new performer on for the first time? is a performer having issues that keeps him from doing his job as usual...in other words what is the conflict for these street performers.
After the first 10 minites... these street performers become profesional real fast... never forgetting a line or a lyric or missing an entrance... they cease to become real people any more.

I dunno... It says too much in one song. First were talking about Paradice's bi-sexuality and how spiderman spins in her "sheets and in sexuality", then were dissing the president and the war. Too much at one time...
I still think Eden Espinosa and Ramona Keller are phenominal. I know its early, but for Keller to even go on stage with this show and make her performance shine, through all the bad writing and story lines, I think she desaerves a Tony nomination. Raven alone is fantasic.

J'adore Ramona, Eden and all the other performers! And I actually do quite like the other songs (especially 'Once Upon A Time' - cheese factor: 10, lovely factor: 10) so I'm pleased that we can hear them on the OBC.
The book is bloody awful. No single doubt about it. I appreciate the 'fairy tale' thing but this ain't no Grimm. At best, the plot is functional.
I can totally understand that 'Superlover' might be better in the show. Thibodeaux: "Damn right, Paradice! Preach it!" <---- that's exactly how I would be!

The song was not bad at all. It was controversial with lyrics not sugarcoated like most Broadway tunes we know dearly aspiring (yet mechanic) Actors, Dancers (With those annoying Jazz Hands), and Singers practive to every day.
The song didn't just speak the truth about America, but it took the 'Ignorant' and placed the truth in his backyard. So God Bless that song and more like it.

True, it confronted issues not typical of Broadway fare, but it's been done before in a much better way (Show Boat, Rent, anyone)?
With lyrics like "He's just spinning beneath my sheets in insect-uality" I find it difficult to appreciate the serious message of the song.
