Susan Spencer was Kate Fisher's understudy as Jo in the production of Little Women. (The tour is now closed-Thanks LizzieCurry) Personally I greatly enjoyed Ms. Spencer's performance but I was wondering what all of you thought if you have perhaps seen her performances. I also thought her performance was greatly based off of Sutton's. I know that this has already been discussed some so sorry for posting again.

I saw her when Kate was on medical leave and she took over the part for a while. I thought she was good, nothing more. A competent singer, yet lacking a strong stage presence. It is hard to up Sutton on a part like that. I think she did a fine job, yet she left a lot to be desired.

...What happened next, was stranger still, a woman breathless and afraid, appeared out of the night, completely dressed in white. She had a secret she would tell, of one who had mistreated her. Her face and frightened gaze, my mind cannot erase...But then she ran from view. She looked so much like you...

I absolutely adored Susan Spencer when I saw Little Women in D.C. Having seen the show twice on Broadway with Sutton, she had to live up to a lot and I was not disappointed. I had been interested in seeing Kate since I had heard such good things about her, but when I realized that Susan and Andrew Varela are married I was curious. Susan definitely did not have the power that Sutton brings to everything, but I did not feel that the character of Jo March was compromised. There were little things that Susan did, little looks and stuff, that I just loved!

Not anymore; the tour closed! re: Susan Spencer

But yeah, I've seen both Susan and Kate and didn't know which one I liked better. Both wonderful. I never saw Sutton, so I can't really speak on that part.

I saw Susan and thought she was great, but I was disappointed a bit with the singing because not many people can match Sutton Foster's voice. "Astonishing" was pretty, but sounded completely different.

a little off topic but Susan was a WONDERFUL Fantine. She covered the role on Broadway, and posessed a natural grace, a beautiful voice, and EXCELLENT acting ability. She was also stunning. A great performer.

I was saddened that my Factory Girl was out when I saw the show re: Susan Spencer

How was she in the role? re: Susan Spencer

I have seen Sutton Foster and Susan Spencer in the role and though I am a huge Sutton fan from TMM and Drowsy Chaperone, I preferred Susan's take on the role, overall- though there were parts where I preferred Sutton's take. Jo is not a subtle character of course, but with Sutton, I saw a little too much of Millie in her choices. Sutton has incredible comedic timing, which is great for some elements in the show, but not so great for others. Susan had a more toned down take and I thought her singing was great. She doesn't have the Broadway belt that Sutton has, but her voice had a bit more warmth, which was appropriate for somgs such as Some Things are Meant to Be.

I LOVED Susan's "Some Things are Meant to Be." She and Autumn Hurlbert were wonderful together. Susan's Jo is more maternal to Beth, than Kate's, especially in that scene. An interesting take (not sure if I liked it more! I might've!).
