Posted: 4/3/05 at 12:56amI actually saw this production and tracked down the pictures. They were all in "period-dresses" to show that Sweeney lives throughout the ages and wasn't only around in the 1800s. For example, Hitler didn't live in the same era Sweeney Todd did, but he was very much a modern day Sweeney. It was very effective. I was blown away!

Posted: 4/3/05 at 12:58amI almost left out!!! The set was designed off of a Picasso painting of a bird. Connecting the set/conflict and Johanna's character as well as some happenings that take place in the story. At one point Johanna appears in the giant bird that is hanging on stage and is eluminated with light. It was awesome!

Posted: 4/3/05 at 12:59amI'm curious, how is Hitler a Sweeney? I don't know much about his life. Did someone wrong him and he decide to take it out on the world?

Posted: 4/3/05 at 1:03amInside the interior of Hitlers mind he was wronged by many and didn't feel they deserved to live. He felt that Jews (and many other races) were degrating and not worthy to be in society. Sweeney felt this way about the Judge and the Beatle and much of society for that matter (which led him to think that killing ALL of his customers rather than just that of the Judge and the Beatle wouldn't be such a bad idea). It never truley says that Sweeney was a wronged man (Sweeney states that he was). That's up for the audience to determine.

"Did someone wrong him and he decide to take it out on the world?"
In his mind, he thought the Jews had wronged him.

Exactly. The actors really know what they are doing too. They really created awesome characters that didn't identify too exact with that of Angela Landsbury and Len Cariou/George Hearn. They were very original. And I mean that with every character including Anthony/Johanna, Tobias, ect.

Wow this production looks even more bizarre then the London SWEENEY that's transferring to Broadway!
Very cool though that a high school attempted it and that the over all production values were so handsome (except for that poor Joanna who looks like she is wearing Miss Piggy's wig). Was this a performing arts high school? You saw this production HAT -- how did the kids handle them difficulty of the material?

No, it's a public high school. The let the two main highschools combine and all audition for the same program called the Bradford Theater Arts Program. And they blow me away every time I see them. Sweeney was just over the top!
Oh...and the kids handled the material beautifully. I can honestly say that every note and harmony was there in the chorus and the leads sang the roles almost just as well as the pros did. I was in shock! I don't know of any highschool that could have pulled of Sondheim like this! Especially Sweeney Todd.

Posted: 4/3/05 at 1:19amI have only actually seen a few productions at Bradford, but a friend of mine's daughter is always in them. And I'm a sucker for Sondheim so I just couldn't miss this one. Hahaha.

Posted: 4/3/05 at 1:25ami assume the big round think with the streamer-ish curtain is lovett's oven? Seems very interesting, i just prefer more literal sets (unfortunately my high school's shows were only remembered for their amazing sets and very little in the realm of staging/ characterization)
