re: Sweeney Todd TV Version Question

I still lover her and include her as one of the best parts of the dvd. Her acting, character wise, was a great Johanna that was played quite differently and worked well. And her singing is good in its own special way

The DVD is of the Los Angeles cast, video taped at the Shubert Theatre in Century City (which was recently torn down, sadly). To the best of my knowledge, they didn't tour it (with Angela, etc.). Some of them may have hit the road a bit, but not this exact cast.

And yes, Betsy Joslyn drives me nuts. Not only does she cross her eyes when she holds a note out, but she goes insanely sharp as well. Not just slightly off, but to the MOON. I almost had to call a nurse when I first heard her. I thought it was a joke. But this lady kept working! She's been in many shows now. I've never seen her in anything else, so I can't judge her overall, but her Johanna was the pits. Chris G. wasn't much better as Anthony. He kept reminding me of Pat Boone with his blond hair piece, in some kind of Lawrence Welk -type show. They both were very cartoonish and buffoonish. All you have to do is listen to Sarah Rice and Victor Garber on the OBCR and you know right away what was missing.

Besty Joslyn does have a nice instrument, I'll give her that. But it's like she has no control over it. And yes, she goes sharp whenever she holds a note, right as she's cutting off. Maybe the eye crossing triggers something in her brain that affects her ability to hear pitches.

Haha, I agree about Cris. He should be the poster child for the existence of the 80s. That haircut. Oy vey.
