I'm not certain whether that could be true about the dirt harming Len Cariou. The gravediggers in the Broadway production were at work from half-hour to the start of the show. They had the dirt out of the lift by the time the show began. I imagine the lift would have been swept out long before Len Cariou had to step into the lift for his rise from the grave, since he had a few minutes before making his entrance. I think it was just the rigors of the role that ravaged his voice.
