"Yes i KNOW that means, A Little Priest, By the Sea, Green Finch many other favs would be gone"
Wait, cutting By the Sea and Green Finch is one thing, but A Little Preist? Why would they cut that? That is prbably the major comic relief in the whole show.

On the plus side, you know that Tim Burton is always going to bring an incredible point of view to the table. He's not going to try to just video tape a stage show of it.
Yes, I agree. I hope it turns out really great. I love Tim Burton as a director and i'm curious to see how he will interpret Sweeney onto the big screen.
btw, Welcome to the boards Sugarpop!

I really can't see it being done as a "sung through". Theatre, but musicals esp are much more about the ole "willing suspension of disbelief". Most ( not all) films are almost hyper realistic. It's just the nature of the medium and its abilities.
"Priest" is a great number, esp @ pointing up the characters of the "odd couple" here. I just don't see how two people would start singing to each other about how they are going to enjoy killing and cooking people, not in this medium. I guess they could come up w devices ( Punch & Judy come to mind) but I still think alot of songs are going to have to go.

i just hope he doesn't change all the songs like in charlie & the chocolate factory

Wow, look at me, replying to something from the first page. Just wanted to let you know that Burton didn't change the songs from CatCF. He used the original songs from the book that were cut from the first movie version.
I really wonder what they're going to do with the ballads. I suppose they could do the opening one over the opening credits, but I think that the final one could cause problems. Like, how are they going to show Sweeney start to sing again?
LITTLE PRIEST is in the script (that I read, anyway) though again, like EPIPHANY, it is truncated.
I can't remember where, but I did read Burton is using that screenplay that's been circulating for so long.
The weird thing is... in that script theres a satellite dish in the middle of the barber shop, and his razor blades are plade by an actor on roller skates!
Oooops, wrong show.
I thought Hairspray was going to be a big departure from stage to screen... but with good 'ol Burton... I think Sweeney will be.

I was reading on comingsoon.net and there was an article on there about "Borat Vs. Depp in Sweeney Todd" saying that Sasha Baron Cohen is in negotaions for Pirelli. I didn't think of it until yesterday but Cohen kinda resembles the guy who played Pirelli in the Sweeney dvd(emphasis on kinda). The only other thing I'm hoping for with the casting is that Freddie Highmore plays Tobias.
The Sweeney movie is one of a few films that I'm eager and can't wait to see(the others incase anyone was wondering were The Dark Knight, Pirates 3, The Simpsons Movie, and The Prestige)
And the Cyndi Lauper rumours are starting again once she leaked on her message board that she auditioned for the film.
Apparently Streep is out due to a scheduling conflict.
Edmund: there was nothing wrong with changing the songs in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. They actually went back to Roald Dahl's lyrics, which I LOVED. The man was a genius and his like shall not be seen again. ;_;
"Apparently Streep is out due to a scheduling conflict."
But, Garland Grrrl made it clear that Streep was playing Lovett.
Grrl?
The story is Streep was offered the role but that its not going to pan out. Grrl's info would have been right when she got it.
Streep is out. She's got another film. No definite word yet on who's up for it... Should know more in the next couple of weeks, if not sooner!
From David Poland's blog:
"Yes, Virginia...
Sacha Baron Cohen will be in Sweeney Todd with Johnny Depp, as will the great Jim Broadbent. It's kind of a brilliant move for Cohen, whose days of being unrecognizable enough to get people to play with him unsuspectingly are about to end forever.
And as Mrs. Lovett, after a turn down from one Oscar goddess, they are close to casting the role, which looks like it will be yet another Toni winner, sunshine.
(Oy... when I get gossip competitive it hurts my head."
Looks like Toni Collette is going to be Mrs. Lovett and Jim Broadbent as Judge Turpin.

I didn't think Lauper would be considered for this film. With the kinds of names rumored for the Judge and Pirelli I figured they'd get a more bankable actress (perhaps I am wrong and Lauper is considered a bankable actress).
After seeing Toni Collette succeeding in every film I have seen her in, I am hoping the part goes to her.
Does anyone know if the rumors about Bernadette Peters auditioning for the role are true?

Personally, I am REALLY happy about this movie.
1. I love Johnny Depp.
2. I also love Tim Burton.
3. I love Sweeny Todd!
WHAT A COMBO!
I just hope they don't pick someone stupid to be Mrs. Lovett. That would just ruin it.
I also think this movie will be good for those who like Broadway but can't exactly experience it (because they're in another state). And although they have national tours, some people might not be able to go to them. It's also good for us New Yorkers and Showgoers because now we can watch it whenever we want!
Thats what I love about Movie Musicals--- it can expand people's horizons. :)
I prefer the Dahl lyrics and always wondered why they never made it into the orignal. He did write the screenplay.
I wonder if Fiona Apple or Marylon Manson could get roles in this Sweeney, as I see they have covered songs for the NBC CD.
I do love Toni Collette but I really don't think she is the best casting for Mrs. Lovett. They would also be smarter to go with a bigger name. My two cents.
Negotiations took place, contracts went out and then Meryl said no. BAD MERYL!
I wonder if it was money or that she didn't like Burton's concept for the piece? She's was verbally attached to the project under Sam Mendes, so its interesting that she ended up passing on it at the 11th hour...
I believe it's partly that Meryl did not want to play such an unattractive character now that her glam quotient is up again.
I find that hard to believe...she was sure glammed up in Mother Courage.
She's never cared if a role was glamerous. She'd do anything if it interested her to do it.
