Sweeny / Spelling Bee

So I hate it when people ask things like this, but I just wanted other opinions...
So my dad and I are off to NYC next week and I've got a full line up of shows... The question is I really want to see Sweeny, but I don't know if my dad would appreciate it as much as I hope... He loved Avenue Q, so that's why I'd pick Spelling Bee as the "alternate"
Is Sweeny worth my loving it and my dad not liking it as much as I'd hope... or should I stick with the Bee where we'd both have a fun afternoon at the theatre??
Thanks for your opinions!!

Wow. . .They're two completely different shows.
My mom loved Avenue Q, but I knew she would have HATED Sweeney Todd. . .I think you have to have an appreciation for Sondheim first and then for a bloody story. . .that is convoluted and twisted (in more ways than one.)
I would stick with Spelling Bee. It'll be fun and funny and your dad will probably love it. It's a safe bet.
Oh, and post #300---go!

Posted: 7/4/06 at 6:58pmWell, from a guy who hates Sweeney, I recommend Spelling Bee above it in a second. However, even if I enjoyed Sweeney (which, I'll reiterate, I did not), I would still say Spelling Bee. It's a show you can both enjoy together, and if one of you gets picked to be a speller, that's an even better experience to share together. I'd go with the Bee. Funny always triumphs over dramatic.

Posted: 7/4/06 at 7:12pmMy two favorite shows... I could never choose myself. Both are incredible and competely different. But to really appreciate this Sweeney, you need a good grasp of the story before you see the show [or else just see it multiple times]. I'd go with Bee.

Posted: 7/4/06 at 7:14pmThey're my two favorite shows, but I agree that you might be confused a little if you don't know the story of Sweeney. I'd go with Spelling Bee, and one of you try to be a guest speller.

I know Sweeny quite well... it's my dad I'm worried about.
Thanks for your input! I thought I'd be looking at Bee as my best bet (I do think it'd be fun if one of us was picked as a speller -- I just couldn't tell them I'm an actor.. I hear they don't like that)

For my birthday present my Dad bought me tickets for front row at Sweeney because it was a special thing for me. I told him I would take him, besides I already saw it with everyone else I know who likes seeing shows. I explained the story to him in about 15 minutes to encompass everything that might need clarification without giving anything away.
He liked it, but I think Bee would be safer and fully appreciated

I'm sorry, I just couldn't take it anymore... It's spelled SWEENEY. (I'm sure it was just a typo, but I couldn't stand to look at it)
And for the question asked... I think Spelling Bee would be easier to enjoy.

Posted: 7/4/06 at 10:57pmI knew "Sweeny" looked funny!! Man, do I feel like an IDIOT! haha -- but that wouldn't be very nice to just be like "ciao dad -- enjoy the city" --- but now my problem is, if I want to see Bee, I can only go on a Sat Mat and I have a coupon for it, but it doesn't cover Saturday Matinees -- is Bee usually on TKTS for Saturday afternoon???

You can look on the tkts site and see if it is one they have been having seats for. That may help in making your decision.
Spelling Bee was wonderful. We saw it because it was the only thing remotely interesting at tkts. We loved it!
