I remember reading the original script while I was in high school in the 00s and being very confused as to what, exactly, Charity was doing for a living and why anyone would think it a problem.

"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."

I think there’s always been the implication that taxi dancer is like “escort:” the work they are nominally getting paid for is not the work they are primarily doing.

I have always assumed the answer to Oscar’s question is “yes, Charity has sex for money, but she is doing it from a place one level removed.” The same way so many strippers and go-go dancers are pressured or choose to “do extras” simply because in this economy they can’t afford not to.
