I'm not going to address the quality of direction or choreography in this post (except for 1 point at the end of this post) as I'm sure w/o even having read the posts on SC that it's been covered quite fully.
I will however say that I felt Charolotte D'Amboise completely won the me over after she simply walked on the stage & the audience burst into applause. The gal is a class act. I don't know what happened in Boston. All I know is that I felt a palpable wave of affection flow over to her from the audience to the stage. She handled it beautifully, using it to fuel her action. She's her daddy's girl, a beautiful dancer's body in complete control of her body. I'm sure she danced the choreography not only to whatever was required, but beyond. I bought her characterization of Charity from beginning to end, & when she tells Oscar that she doesn't need to be saved, she's already saved, I believed her. (As an aside, I noticed that she was wiping away real tears at 1 point in the show.)
Regarding O'Hare, I enjoyed his almost "Robin Williams does a musical" interpretation. Indeed, I've known fellas like his Oscar. Yes, they're out there. His singing won't get him a place on the Met's roster, but it jived with his characterization so I didn't penalize him for it. & when he does a 360 & reveals himself to be the typical male of his time to want to marry a virgin, that didn't bother me. I accepted it for the time the show was placed.
I was smitten by the conductor & the orchestra filled w/brass, violins, percussion, etc. I'll bet it's not as full as it was in it's orig. prod'n, but I'm glad that the effects weren't synth'd.
Having said the above, I will say, however, that for the life of me, I don't understand why Annie Reinking wasn't the choreographer of this show. I don't understand why a point has to be made of intentionally not using Fosse's choreography when there are people alive who can pass it on to a company with the authenticity that Annie is capable of doing. & before someone tries to bust me because Cilento danced a Fosse show, it just ain't the same as having Annie do it.
I'm certainly going back to see Applegate.

Maybe she was really crying cause after 20 yrs of workin hard on B'way she is about to be replaced for Opening Nite!
No offense to Applegate, she is after all the $ heroine after the Weisler's lost faith, just the way this whole thing has played out is kinda sad.
and don't even get me started about the Super Talented Dyliss Cronin, who steped in Mid show.
I would have loved to see Her Charity.

I am reminded that I noticed that it is being said that there are new songs & new scenes in the show. I noticed "Love Makes Fools Of Us All" from "Barnum" was used as underscoring for 2 scenes. I'm particularly fond of that song. Don't know the show well enuf to comment on the new songs/scenes.

"just because bob did the show originally i personal don't want to see his staging again. something new something fresh anyday over a rehashed bob fosse show"
tnyc, You said a mouthful.
However, this isn't fresh staging or new choreography just because down-in-the-trenches Fosse-ites didn't do it. My point is that, if there isn't anyone out there who has shown themselves capable of giving us truly fresh direction & staging instead of merely adequate, I'll take Annie Reinking anyday.
Until the next unique, Bob Fosse or Michael Bennett comes along, for me that ain't rehashed, that's straight from the horse's mouth.
