New Yorkers, this is the last weekend to see THE APPLE TREE.

NYU Steinhardt School always presents good productions. This may prove to be no exception.

Going this evening.

Also planning on going this weekend. My voice teacher is in the chorus. Will post my thoughts after the performance.

This is a good little production of a enjoyable show not often in NYC.

Who knew that the tiny stage of The Black Box on NYU campus could hold the singing and dancing chorus of the court of King Arik and his daughter the Princess Barbara, as well as NEW York subway car filled with strap-hanging Manhattanites all wondering "who is she," as they contemplate the blonde in a sequined gown standing in their midst?

The students of Steinhardt do a fine job with the 3 one-act musicals that make up THE APPLE TREE, culminating in the wonderfully comic "Passionella."

Jeremy Morse is the lone actor who moves from musical to musical as the narrator. His voice is especially fine, his timing is on point, and he is charming.

"The Diary of Adam and Eve" is a poignant musical earnestly sung by Tim Matson and Ashley Foster. Mr. Matson is bright-eyed and naive as the happy-to-be-single Adam, and Ms. Foster is the fresh and happy-to-be-here Eve, who can name everything in the garden be they look like what they are. "Because it looks like a fish." No matter how many times one sees and hears this quiet musical comedy, it still brings a tear to the eye.

"The Lady or the Tiger" is a mad romp telling the tale of jeolous love. Kevin Moon Loh is comically menacing as King Arik. William Coyne, as Captain Sanjar, is confident and full of bravado who dreams of life in Gaul with his illicit lover, the Princess Barbara. Shannon Riley, as Barbara, is the haughty Princess holding the fate of her lover in her hands. Ms. Riley plays the sex and the comedy, and comes across as a combination of a 1940's Lana Turner and Christine Baranski in Harem pants, bare mid-drif and feathered headress.

Kristin Carlson and Luke Smith shine especially bright as Ella and Flip in "Pasionella." Their satiric comedy abilities highight the core of this musical comedy gem, based on the Jules Feiffer story. They make you laugh out loud, and cry with personal recognition of the characters. Ms. Carlson, as Ella/Passionella, lights up the stage, and Mr. Smith is equally bright as the rock star Flip searching for reality in Hollywood.

The singing by all is wonderfully fine. The ensemble makes makes this an unexpectedly big musical in this intimate production. The scene design and costumes were surprising, and they both add further professional polish to the engaging performances.

There's no question that it will win your heart, and you're liable to find yourself watching it with a beaming smile on your face.

There are two performances left: Saturday 11/12 at 8pm, and Sunday 11/13 at 3pm.

For less than the price of a first-run movie, New Yorkers can experience a wonderful piece of musical theatre by Bock and Harnick and the students of Steinhardt that is rarely done in Manhattan.

Go.

Any musical theatre buff living in Manhattan worth his/her salt cannot do better this weekend than catching THE APPLE TREE.

WICKED will always be with us, but THE APPLE TREE is only here through tomorrow.
