Hmmn...I loved the movie but can't quite envision how they will get it onto stage... I guess time will tell though!

Gothampc(shriek): Give my regards to Broadway because I'm going to the movies.
I'm not too excited about this. Sounds like another flop.
In my opnion, there are way too many movies they are planning to bring to the stage. Catch Me if You Can sounds like a great idea, but I think they're over-doing a little bit too much. They should be writing more original musicals. Where are all those writers out there? All we have are revivals and musicals based on movies or books. We need something just for the theater. There are only a few shows on Broadway right now that are completely written for Broadway. Urinetown, Rent, there was Frog and Toad, and than there's Zanna Don't off Broadway, which is original I believe.
At least it's something that children will be able to enjoy. Though, I can't really picture it being done as a live show?
I can't quite envision Shrek as a live show either... I'd really like to hear a Broadway company singing "I'm a Believer" though! (love that song) if they kept it in. They also have quite the casting voices challenge to live up to, but we'll see who they get if it all comes to fruition.

Musicals based on original works have always been far more rare than adaptations. Essentially, musical theater is an adaptative form, better at expanding on existing stories than trying to pitch new concepts (with exceptions, obviously.) Rodgers and Hammerstein didn't do ANY 'original' works, after all.
This is NOT a new trend. It goes back to the roots of the whole thing.
And RENT and FROG AND TOAD are both adaptations. URINETOWN's pastiche which isn't the same but it's still a story playing off a perceived familiarity with the ideas.
