Actually, an answer would help me a lot too. We're doing it next year at school. Right now I'm thinking that I'm not going to audition, even though, my directors are going to beat me.

Dishonest salesman Harold Hill comes to a town (River City) to swindel the townspeople out of their money by organizing a boys band. he falls in love with a "old maid" the librarian Marian, but Marian knows he's a fraud and trys to notify the mayor. but she realizes that she's in love with Harold and they live happily ever after. but the real hero in the story is Harold's best friend Marcellus Washburn.

9ish for main male roles.

Harold, Marcellus, the Mayor, the school board(barbershop quartet), Charlie Cowell and Tommy Dijalas(sp?)and "the lisping kid" Winthrop (Marian's little brother)

WHY are we getting all these "What is X about?" threads?

All these shows are major hits (KISS ME KATE, MUSIC MAN) with cast albums available in libraries and music stores everywhere.

There are also several good books available which give a synopsis of each major show. Try BROADWAY'S GREATEST MUSICALS or Kurt Ganzl's Book of the Musical Theatre.

I expect BWW members are smarter than average theatre fans and would know how to use the internet and libraries to look up this info, without adding needless posts here.

So, in short ... KNOCK IT OFF!!!

To add to what FrontRow said, there are also decent film versions of these shows available everywhere. All it takes is a little effort and a little work if one is truly interested in finding out about this stuff.
