A production of Conor McPherson's THE SEAFARER began previews at the Irish Repertory Theatre on March 30th. This marks Matthew Broderick's return to Irish Rep, with Ciarán O’Reilly directing.
I bought a $24 ticket on a whim and will be going next weekend. Any early reports?

I saw it Sunday. I was a big fan of the Broadway production a few years ago, and while this one was good (I loved the set) for me it didn't compare. I'm not sure Matthew Broderick was right for Mr Lockhart, I didn't feel even a quiet menace from him. I am very interested to hear what others thought of it

I found this to be an excellent production, beautifully directed and performed by the entire cast.
It begins slowly, but it gradually draws the audience in as the tension builds. This is one instance when the payoff really pays off.
Matthew Broderick is giving his most nuanced performance in years, and that is most welcome. He has dug more deeply into character this time and that has paid dividends. I disagree with fosca3, in that I felt a menacing presence from him the minute he descended the stairs.
This was one of the best productions of the season. No matter how often the theatre lets us down (or rather, those who work in the theatre), just one play like this makes theatregoing all worthwhile.

This is great to hear. I’m seeing it this weekend and very much looking forward to it. I find that Broderick seems more comfortable in off Broadway productions (at least the ones I’ve seen) and I enjoyed him in Shining City a couple of years back as well as A Starry Messenger several years ago. Love the Irish Rep productions as well as their new theatre.

I saw this today and thought it was a very good production. I have a little trouble deciphering what the author’s message is but it did have me intrigued throughout. The performances were excellent but at times some of the dialogue was lost for me in the Irish accents. I did think Broderick did have a menacing presence especially since we don’t usually see him in that type of role. All in all, a very good production worth seeing.
