It was the tony awards that messed up both this musical and Swenney revival
No offense to the Tony Awards but there have been many times when they chose awards in a way to economically help the community. So this year they gave best musical to something that was sold out and gave the best revival to a show that was already set to close. THE WEDDING SINGER, for the 5 Tony nominations it received, can consider itself lucky that there were spots left that couldn't be filled and thus HAD TO be filled by this embarassment of a musical. THE WEDDING SINGER paled deeply in comparison to its competitors. The show got to perform at the Tonys, on live TV. The show would have closed by July had it not received its "leftover" nomination for Best Musical.
I really doubt Avenue Q would be as good as it is if it hadn't won the tony, simply because the award just made it a mroe mainstream show. i know this way of picking winners may not be fair, but its not like sweeney or maybe even the wedding singer where worse then the winners this year. You really doubt AVENUE Q would
be as good as it is if it hadn't won the Tony, because the award just
made it a mainstream show? Okay, explain this argument. I saw AVENUE Q in previews and it was just as damn good as it was and still is after winning its much deserved Tony for Best Musical.
And pardon me, but AVENUE Q is mainstream? How about, AVENUE Q is
good? You couldn't get any more mainstream than THE WEDDING SINGER. It was just a bad show, with humor appealing to people who didn't have the money to afford a ticket to a Broadway show.
"Winning a Tony this year is like winning Best Attendance in third grade: no one will care but the winner and their mom."

"I have also met him in person, and I find him to be quite funny actually. Arrogant and often misinformed, but still funny."
