So now Martin Charnin is jumping on the Witches broomstick and bringing BROOM HILDA:THE MUSICAL to Broadway. People who complain that there are too many "Gay" musicals can now shift focus to the "Witch" musicals. I predict we will see WITCHES OF EASTWICK, BEWITCHED:THE MUSICAL and perhaps even CASPER AND WENDY in the next couple of seasons.

I think DARK OF THE MOON is pretty dated and melodramatic, but if Witchboy is hot, who really cares?

Dark of the Moon is a haunting love story, based on the folk song “The Ballad of Barbara Allen,” and tells the story of a witch boy who must give up his magical powers if he is to keep the love of the very human Barbara.

The plot of Bewitched: The Musical would kill two niches with one show. The role of Darrin would be played by different actors in act one and act two. At the end of act two, the second Darrin would come out of the closet and hook up with Uncle Arthur and Serena would congratulate him for no longer being so uptight.

I assume it would be based on the original film "I Married a Witch" on which the series was based.

Namo - that would not only cover too many witch musicals but also add another gay musical.

Add in puppets (perhaps a cat ala Sabrina) and a reference to GYPSY and you are set

The score could be all Donna Summer songs and the cast would feature Idina Menzel, Kristen Chenoweth, Sutton Foster, Matthew Morrison, Norbert Leo Butz (with optional Taye Diggs), Raul Esparza and Gavin Creel.

But you youngsters here, don't you know the most famous "witch" play of the last 50 years was widely known to be a codified representation of gay life? I'm speaking of course about BELL, BOOK, AND CANDLE. Everyone wore black, there was a big ol cat on stage, and it took place in arty Greenwhich Village -- yes, it was that fresh.

I've heard a bit of the concept cd of Charnin's Broom Hilda, mostly an unknown studio cast(some funny performances though), but Andrea McArdle is in terrific voice on it as Broomhilda herself, but it's not the whole show. A friend worked on it and she raved about the music, who knows maybe he'll strike gold twice with something from the funny papers?

You are correct BOJ, the music being used is from Leroy Anderson's vast catalog, but from what I heard on the disc Charnin has written some very clever lyrics, that keep in perfect spirit to the comic strip. Only question I had upon hearing it is that the score might be a tad too "lush" for the subject matter.
