Forum, GALA, Keegan, MetroStage and Rep Stage among Companies Nominated for Top Prizes . 1st Stage Wins Aniello Award for Outstanding Emerging Theatre Company.

The Helen Hayes judges have underscored the diversity of DC theatre excellence by nominating productions from smaller DC area theatres, along with those of nationally known companies like Arena, Studio, Shakespeare and Synetic, for outstanding resident musical and play productions.

Read the list and am somewhat surprised that Bobby Steggert and the ensemble of Ragtime failed to garner nominations.

Also suprising how many of the older theaters used to get many nominations and now they just get shut out.

"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."

There is so much great work being done in the mid-size and smaller theatres, as well as in the larger theatres, that it's nice to see more of a mix in this year's nominations. To me, it's the fairest group of nominations that I can remember in a long time. It also will inspire the smaller theatres, who many times are ignored in the HH noms, that they now have a better chance to be rewarded for their efforts. I sees dozens of shows and cover them for DC Theatre Scene, and trust me, I have never seen so much joy at a Helen Hayes Awards nominations announcement ceremony than what happened on Monday. I wish you could have been there with me and experienced the joy and the many tears shed by these often neglected mid-size and small theatres when their efforts were rewarded with nominations. It was a beautiful night in DC theatre. I'm still smiling.

Wow, it is not "let's give practically every nomination to Signature" this year.

I really wish "Eclipsed" at Woolly got more nominations, including best resident play. It was really one of the strongest pieces I saw in DC this season (and I saw virtually everything nominated).

"Why do you care what people might say? Why try to fit into their design?" (Side Show)
