I believe that while the TKTS B.O. is technically inside a building, the ticket window faces the outdoors. Does that help? (I could be wrong.)
I think 1 hour should be okay. The TKTS Times Square line up starts about 2 hours before. Why don't you try rushing for Aida tickets instead?
I love the TKTS booth at South Street Seaport. One of the best little secrets in NYC - while the tourists are lining up for hours on end at the Times Square TKTS, the lineup at the SSS TKTS can be as short as 15 minutes. An hour will be plenty of time (even half an hour is more than enough).

tkts in time square on a friday afternoon only takes 45 minutes to get through. Also, the one in southstreet does not get all of the same tickets that the times square one gets. The seats tend to be worse and they do not get all of the same shows.
Nope, that is what I thought as well, until I actually read up on it. The tickets are not really released by computer, hence they are not printed out when you buy them in person. So yes, they get different seats and different shows at the two locations. Also, some shows will release a limited amount of seats immediately, hoping to sell more at the box office and will then release more closer to curtain wtih the seats that are not sold.
hmmm...on the TKTS website they say that the same exact tickets are available at both places because it is done by computers...now I don't know who to believe! I think I'll still try my luck with SSS. Thanks for all the advice! To the person who asked why I'm not doing rush: I've heard that the front row seats that they give out are bad because the stage is too high and you can't see what's going on. If they're really not that bad, I could do that I guess, but I'm pretty short!
