re: TONY AWARD/BEST MUSICAL OF ALL TIME

that's not what i said dude, read it again...first, it's the TONY AWARD BEST MUSICAL which by definition excludes many great shows, and if your idea of the best show is Sweeney, then cool, so is mine, but that doesn't mean that any other choice isn't just as legit...

re: TONY AWARD/BEST MUSICAL OF ALL TIME

It would be hard for me to choose, but it would be one of the following:

Show Boat (technically before the Tonys, but the revival won)
Oklahoma
The Music Man
Les Miserables

LOL, you guys are so defensive, I think Sweeney is the best too, and it is one of my favorites (despite the difference between "overall best" and "personal favorite"). I was just commenting on Sweeney's popularity, that it isn't a big enough show to win such a title because if it is done by a poll, then the contest is based on popularity, not mertit. Don't get me wrong- Sweeney has the merit, but in reality, if the 2005 Tonys gave away such an honar it wouldn't go to Sweeney. And that's a shame.

(Haha, I feel like I'm under a third degree, being asked forceful questions by Sondheim fanatics)

Hey Nugget - I was going to hold back from my choice because I agree with what Robbiej said. BUT, if choreography isn't that big a consideration, then the best musical is MY FAIR LADY. The music is perfection, and if you think Sweeney's book is better, despite an almost word-for-word usage of the Shaw source material, then you are out of your mind re: TONY AWARD/BEST MUSICAL OF ALL TIME

sweeney doesn't have much of a book, as most of it is sung...but i think the adaptation is terrific for My Fair Lady as well

"Your username rings true here. Musicals can have substance without being pretentious or dark. "Hairspray" is joyous, and says a lot about quality of life, without pushing anything on the audience. I love the show's score, and anyone who can't get something from it, even if it is only a passing smile, should seek therapy."

I never said it had to be dark to be enjoyable. I enjoy Godspell, however lame and cheesy it might be. Hairspray just never did anything for me. I admit, I smiled twice, but the show is just way overrated, and no way near best musical.

Goodspell includes a crucifixtion, I think it can fall into the "dark" category at times.

If you don't like Hairspray then so be it, but it isn't fair to accuse someone of being "biased" for considering a show for best musical. That word makes litte sense in that context unless they are a member of the cast or creative team involved with the show. If someone is biased just for liking a show, then by that very logic, you must be biast for not liking it. Titles like "Best Musical" will always be extremely subjective.

OK- If you are asking what show I think would win the poll (and I realize the original post does not) I'm thinkning it would be "My Fair Lady" (deservingly so)...

BUT, the BEST musical of all time, in my opinion? Wow, I guess "Sweeney" may be it, but if you were to ask me on another day, I may just as easily say something else...

Just to clarify:

There is no doubt in my mind that SWEENEY TODD is the best musical, and I think opera re: TONY AWARD/BEST MUSICAL OF ALL TIME, of all-time.

But it just isn't the definitive musical. But who wants to be definitive? To be definitive you must be very 'normal', only exceelent normal. And who wants to be normal?

I called him (or her) biased, because they were obviously an extreme fan of the show, so of course they're going to say Hairspray. Kind of like how tweens would say Wicked.
