Phylicia Rashad gave the commencement speech at my college last year. Her whole speech was about 2 minutes long, where she all talked about was being a TV mom, and she was paid an obscene quantity of money for just that. Previous years speakers included Bill Clinton and Rudy Giuliani, so it was clearly disappointing to the graduating class.
So after I saw the Tonys last year, I just figured that she probably wasn't the best at making speeches.

But some things are not always as easily boiled down to the argument of race Tonya...it may be an easy excuse, but really, is it always the answer? In this case, NO!
drew - tell that (your original posting) to Tovah Feldshuh. A true Broadway legend whose Tony was ripped from her hands by a TV star for ratings. And don't think it wasn't. I'm not saying Rashad is not a good actress - but we all know why she won over Feldshuh, and it wasn't because she was "better."

I just wanted to take this moment to say how dissapointed I was last year with the presenters of the "Best Featured Actor in a Musical" category. "Raul Esparaza"??? Who the hell is that?!

Ghetto, I don't believe anyone ever said a Tony was a guarantee of future work. It's supposed to be a recognition of merit for the job it was won for. Theater is highly competitive - many many more people want to make a living at it than there are jobs. It's just that kind of business.

everyones a little bit racist sometimes, doesnt mean we go around commiting hate crimes
sorry everytime I see the word racist I just have to sing that lol
"It's a great feeling of power to be naked in front of people. We're happy to watch actual incredible graphic violence and gore, but as soon as somebody's naked it seems like the public goes a bit bananas about the whole thing."
It's amazing how a "discussion" about Tony's (which, by the way, was started in a most confronational manner) has dissolved into a petty argument about race (also, by the way, achieved by the same poster who began this topic). I'm sure none of us feels threatened by the fact that a black woman is successful in theatre. The preoccupation with racism is one of the reasons that it still exists. The majority of people today are not racist, and those who do harbor feelings of racism and subsequently voice that opinion or act out are so shunned by society that their views become almost comical.
Awards are nice. People who do good things should be rewarded. Phylicia Rashad is extremely pompous and absurd.
Whatever you feel about Rashaad, I can bet that you did NOT see her performance in A Raisin in the Sun. It was one of the most moving performances I have ever seen on a Broadway stage. She deserved that award. She also accepted it with elegance and grace. Do Not confuse Pompous with Sophistication.

"Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot."
"No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one."

exactly justice. thats why im not worried about it. i didnt start this thread as a confrontation. i dont care what anybody thinks. i posted what i posted.if u decided to respond thats your business. and to correct some misunderstandings. i didnt say everybody's a racist and a hater. i never stated that. i said "some people on this board". not all. if it doesn't apply to u, then dont respond. and i didnt say that Tonys arent anything. I said they werent everything. a lot of people have the misconception that if it/she/he won a Tony that doesn't mean it's good. that's my opinion.
and yes Rashad's Tony was well deserved and it was a historic moment and she accepted the award with grace and class. qualities she exudes at all times because that's the type of woman she is. you may not like her.you may not love her. but she deserves her RESPECT.

No, you didn't vote, Justice, but you did say definitively that she "deserved" the award. How can you know she deserved it if you didn't see the other women?

Because she did a great job on the stage. That proved her deserving. If she was awful and had won, then that means she wouldn't have deserved the award. i.e. IMO, Take Me Out did not deserve the Tony.
