#1Tale Cast: For People WHo Have Seen It
Posted: 8/24/08 at 8:22amFrom what people are saying the cast of A Tale of Two Cities is phenomenal and all deliver. Some say it is the most powerful cast on broadway( I find that hard to believe with a show like Gypsy on broadway. Then again that only has 3 mega performances). With people raving about Toro and Barbour and excellent buzz around Lazar, Wyman Edelman, McGrath, Hayward-Jones, and Early. Buzz is even getting better about Brandi Burkhardt. My question is even if the story and score get panned by critics and audiences alike, do you think the buzz about these performances could keep the show from closing? While it is unlikely that every critic will pan the score and the book there have already been mixed reviews on this board with some people raving about the book and score and some people panning it. While word of mouth can make a show a hit critical acclaim is very important so since the only think mostly anonymous about the reviews on the board is the brilliant performances. So do you think the cast alone could make or break the show?

Casts don't save shows that are universally reviled.
They may prolong the show's demise, but...

Yankeefan, Two Cities is not universally reviled. It is getting mixed praise on here at the moment, and the reviews that actually matter aren't coming out till next month.
I think that this show will get mixed reviews. However, good word of mouth is what will sell tickets.

It is the Barbour show, plain and simple. Other have a good amount of stage time but don't really get much to do...
As for Toro, I do not understand the raves. I thought she was fine but not turning in the perfomance some are claiming. That frankly disappointed me, considering the buzz.

GYPSY may have three Tony-winning performances, but the whole cast is incredibly strong. Don't forget about Leigh Ann Larkin, Tony Yazbeck, Marilyn Caskey, Sami Gayle, Alison Fraser, Lenora Nemetz, etc.
BOEING-BOEING, AUGUST: OC, [title of show], SOUTH PACIFIC, IN THE HEIGHTS and XANADU all have top notch acting ensembles that could kick TALE OF TWO CITIES' cast.

The TWO CITIES cast was pretty brilliant... but there are better casts out there. No cast can save this bland mediocre snore from its flaws.
Winston, we keep meeting in these threads. It's kinda making be nauseous. Enough!

Barbour is the only one who really gets anything to do of substance. It's definitely the James Barbour show up there at the moment.
Brandi Burkhardt is incredibly bland, and really should have been replaced. Aaron Lazaar sings very well, but gets nothing to do. The disappointment was Natalie Toro, who I was expecting something brilliant from, after all the hype about that performance. She's fine, but it's not the incredible performance some would have you believe.

Posted: 8/24/08 at 10:56amJames Barbour was the only stand out in the cast when I saw it the other day. Without him I barely would have made it through it.

Posted: 8/24/08 at 11:00amEven if the actors were brilliant in Tale, the characters are so thinly written, with the exception of Sidney Carlton (strangely enough) that none of the performances other than Barbour's, are truly memorable. Kind of like Titanic was.

Does anyone know if any of the actors flirted and/or tried to pick up any teen girls at the stage door?
In the lead up to the show's Broadway premiere, I read more about Natalie's performance on here then I did about Barbour's. Some of the people who saw the Florida production were even assuring us that Toro was a shoo-in for a Tony this year.

Since nobody outside of New York or BWW knows who any of these people are I doubt the cast of this show will "save" it.
Remember, even Lansbury and Seldes couldn't save Love All, or Bounce, or whatever that tennis show was called.
