Does anyone know what the technique Idina Menzel's vocal coach Tanya Travers teaches is called? In an interview on Broadway.com Idina says it is a technique based on speech and I wanted to know what it is called.
I actually study with her. I don't think it has a name - it's her unique method. "Natural Singing"?

Its basically a take on Speech Level Singing, though Tanya Travers isn't a certified teacher, so she can't use the name.
There is no such thing as being "certified" for the technique called 'Natural Singing', nor are voice teachers certified. Tania has 20 years as a voice teacher/coach and that's all the certification I need! And it's working for me . . . my voice gets better and better every week! Woo Hoo!
I am currently her student and she's incredible. Anyway, when it comes to technique, contact Tania -- she'd be glad to speak for herself about her rates and training. She has asked me to make that clear . . . and would prefer no one else, including her students, speak for her; she's a teacher and perfectly willing to speak for herself.
Check local listings [i.e. the phone book].
I do highly recommend Tania, though -- I find her fabulous and her coaching is really helping me improve my voice!
Love and Light,
Angela Theresa

No one is "certified" in Speech Level Singing . . . and secondly, you are mis-informed Jesus. You obviously have never studied with Tania and do not know anything about her technique.
Anyone interested should just call whatever voice teacher you want and ask about what they do and how they do it.
Tania is listed in the NYC phone directory.

Speech Level Singing is a registered Trademark and the use of the phrase or title is expressly forbidden to those who are not certified Speech Level singing instructors. Yes you must be certified to advertise or claim to teach Speech Level Singing. Just has a look at Seth Riggs' website.
You HAVE to have at least level one certification to claim you teach Speech Level Singing. Do not assume I'm misinformed. Especially if you follow with something that is patently false. I have studied with Tanya and think she is a wonderful teacher. Her technique is VERY similar to Speech Level Singing. Blending registers by smoothing bridges using larynx relaxing exercises and singing pure vowels.
My stating that Tanya Travers isn't certified was in no way an attack against her. I was merely explaining the likely reason she doesn't advertise her technique as Speech Level Singing. She can't by law because she has chosen not to persue certification.
I work with Tanya as well, and I highly reccomend her!

Never met anyone who is certified in it in my life (and I've been around awhile, in the field), nor ever heard of it being "taught" formerly anywhere. Tania Travers never claimed to use the technique. What Idina said does not reflect nor varify Tania Traver's method of teaching.

And Tania does not claim to teach it, either.

Again, point made.

Perhaps she used that with you, and not others. Or you interpreted it that way. You are now assuming that is how Tania teaches me and her other students. I am telling you, she doesn't do anything like that with me. In fact, I've never heard of anything relating or referred to as larynx relaxing exercises or even, necessarily, singing only pure vowels.
Tania has asked me to not post how we work together (and probably would prefer you hadn't either); as it (her coaching me) about me, my voice and based on my unique habits good or bad and my unique voice production. Not on you or any other student, including Idina. She may or may not have used those techniques you mentioned above on Idina, myself or other students -- but that, too, was between you two at the time you studied with her.

Or she does not teach it, at all? Her "technique" may be based upon her 20 years experience as a voice teacher/coach and based on many of her experiences with everyone from Broadway stars to rock stars whom she works with -- in fact, it may be a technique belonging solely to Tania Travers and no one else!
Again, I highly continue to recommend people ask someone directly and not depend on the students only. Go directly to the source.

Blah Blah friggin' Blah...
We don't care who took lessons and how long or who is her star pupil....I think the point here is, HOW DO WE FIND HER TO TAKE VOCAL LESSONS FROM HER....is this too much to ask? If so, then it may not be worth the trouble.
I'm sure she's great, but if she's harder to find than God, what's the point?
I would love to find out about her. I hear she's wonderful. But does everyone have to be a diva and one up everyone else????? Grow up!
All I want, and obviously some others do as well, is contact info where to reach her and ask how much she is so one can possibly take vocal lessons.
Not hatin'...just sayin"
