Tartaglia vs. Foa??

Posted: 6/7/05 at 5:11amAnyone else think it was really disrespectful/wierd that they got Tartaglia to go on for Avenue Q instead of Barret Foa? If I was Foa, I'd not only be pissed, but hurt!

but when john and steph were on they made references to how they won the tony for best musical last year... sooo, technically not foa.
eh, it made sense to me.
i didnt think it was "disrespectful/weird" to use him. he didn't die, he left the show is all and acknowledging he was in the show when it won the tony, what they were making references too, makes absolute sense to me

Posted: 6/7/05 at 10:34amI'd pay good money to see that :)...just kidding. No, I agree...it made sense he was there, and knowing that he and Barrett are good friends, I'm sure that no one minded.

Posted: 6/7/05 at 10:37amI was confused (not to mention excited and surprised to see John) until they mentioned last years awards. Plus most of the views wouldn't know he left and was replaced.

I, too, was confused to see Tartaglia on stage instead of Foa. I personally would have preferred to see Foa; he's the one I saw in the show and though I love Tartaglia, I would had rather had seen Foa since he is the current B'way boy.
But it worked just fine. Perhaps if you read into it real deep it could come across as disrespectful, but for those who remember the Tony's last year, seeing a Foa may have confused those who don't keep abreast of the replacements. Or something.

Well, if you want to get technical about it, Tartaglia did not win his catagory. Avenue Q won as best overall musical, meaning the show, as a whole, won. Barrett is now in the show that won.
#8re: Tartaglia vs. Foa??
Posted: 6/7/05 at 1:41pmThe answer could be as easy as: Avenue Q did a Sunday night show. Maybe they didn't have enough swings to let Barrett go?

I don't think Johnny was there at all.
That segment was only on film at the Music Hall
and Stephenie and that other woman were wearing different dresses than they were live.

Posted: 6/7/05 at 2:00pmYou're right, it wasn't live. They showed it to us on a video screen.
#12re: Tartaglia vs. Foa??
Posted: 6/7/05 at 2:09pmI found John's appearance strange also. I adore him, but it's Foa's role now.
#13re: Tartaglia vs. Foa??
Posted: 6/7/05 at 2:17pmOh I just love them both. They're both gorgeous and extremely talented. Although I would have liked to see Barrett Foa on the screen just to give him some credit now that he is Avenue Q's new leading man.

Posted: 6/7/05 at 3:25pmI enjoyed his little cameo. Isn't he going to Las Vegas to do Avenue Q?

When does Barret leave Avenue Q? I'm seeing the show in August, and I'm PRAYING he's still there.
Sorry 'bout the thread jacking.

He should be there in August, don't worry.
I believe he's signed on until October.

Posted: 6/7/05 at 4:24pmQ did not have a Sunday night show, so if Barrett was asked he could have done it. I absolutely adore Johnny and welcome any opportunity to see him, but I am a bit upset that Barrett didn't do it. Having nothing to do with who i like better, the role of Princeton belongs to Barrett now. I understand that Johnny was in it when they won the Tony, but as someone said, it wasnt him that won the Tony, it was the show of which Barrett is now lead. Besides the fact, it wasn't "Johnny" and "Stephanie" who were talking, it was "Princeton" and "Kate." I do think it's a bit of a slap in the face to Barrett that he wasn't chosen to do Princeton, so I am upset on his behalf. However, for all we know, he was asked and he declined. I doubt it, but hey, you never know

Posted: 6/7/05 at 5:23pmJohn T. all the way. I became disenchanted with Barrett after seeing his poor excuse of a cabaret act a few months ago.

I'm sure Barrett is fine about the whole thing.
John created the role, and it was great seeing him as Princeton again.

Honestly, I don't even see where this thread came from. That's like saying if you had Marissa come on as Tracy it would be disrespectful to the people who were in it now. But if you were to say who was the original Tracy people would say Marissa. I don't think it is anything against Barrett at all, happened. If Stephanie weren't still in the show they would have had her come on and make the appearence with John anyway too if they could. It's not about who is playing it now its about who are people going to recognize for it. Its like when Les Mis was passing A Chorus Line and they brought back Colm Wilkinson for the curtain call of the performance to do his little bit as Valjean. Certain people will be associated with certain roles because they originated them. I don't see anything wrong with how it was done. Quite the opposite actually, I think that it made perfect sense.
Would I have been mad if Barrett HAD done it? Of course not, I like Barrett as much as anyone else. But I do think its wrong to say its disrespectful to have the Originals up there. They always get top preference.

Yes, but the Tony voters saw John in the role. John orignated the characters. I think it'd be disrespectful to have Barrett Foa appear at the Tony's. He wasn't apart of the many readings and the off-broadway run. It's Tartaglia's voice on the cast recording. It's his Tony nominated performance that the voters saw.

Chris,
It wouldn't be disrespectful to have Foa perform the part at the Tony's at all! Tartaglia, although at one time did, no longer has ANY part in the show. It was just a wierd choice, and as an accquaintance of Foa's (he went to school with some friends) I felt really bad that he had to sit there and watch it. He is now playing the part, he should get to perform. Tartaglia lost his chance. (but I am in no means bashing him as a performer, let me just state that for the record. he's great!)

Posted: 6/9/05 at 8:14amEveryone - if you haven't done so yet, please go to John's website, www.johntartaglia.com, and read his blog, where he addresses all of this Johnny vs. Barrett business. Apparently, some people have been really hurtful about it, sending him emails and everything, it's sad.
