A friend just sent me an email saying that Tharon has passed.

A true giant -

If you see a show on B'way and appreciate the lighting, say a thanks to Tharon. She changed the way shows are lit, and how we view them.

I'm in shock. We were only just recently admiring her personality and her artistry here on this board. She was an absolute legend. And quite a character.

She was the Dean of American Lighting Designers and greatly admired by her colleagues.

May she rest in peace.

Tharon Musser, the dean of Broadway lighting design, passed away at the age of 84. "After a long illness, Tharon passed away comfortably in the company of her long-time partner Marilyn Rennagel," reports Steve Terry, who worked with Tharon on the Tony Award-winning production of A Chorus Line in 1975. "For those of us that knew Tharon, this is not unexpected news, but still very, very hard to hear."

She was a brilliant lighting designer who shaped the lights of Broadway as we experience them today. For ACL, she implemented the use of the first computerized lighting board. We have lost another Broadway legend. RIP.

She was truly a magician in mid-air. If I close my eyes, I can still remember some of those looks from Chorus Line or Follies or Little Night Music.
