as a disabled hairspray fan (that everyone knows and loves) I suppose it would just be weird if I didnt express an opinion...
It doesn't make me uncomfortable, I think it would be an inaccurate portrayal of the special ed to not have someone with a developmental disability.
Something far more interesting is that NBC is creating a pilot of a comedy series called Im With Stupid based off a BBC show of the same name- it was written about in the NYTimes recently. Its about a bunch of people who live in special housing and the cast of characters will include someone who uses a voicebox to speak and another who is a double amputee.
Certainly its preferable when a disabled person portrays their own disability but it can only help the disabled rights movement to show that we can laugh at ourselves.
No, Bruce didn't write the show, but he came up with that line during rehearsals among all of the ad-libbing he did while on the road.
i thought it was VERY funny! it definitely told us something about our political system, and almost everyone laughed at it. it was meant to be a political joke, not a "make fun of the retard joke".
I agree with JP2,TapTap, and Mistress Spouzic . If we are being politically correct it's disabled not handicapped. I honestly don't remember the joke or character. I wonder if it will be in the movie?
I agree with BroadwayEnthusiast2, its not like they were poking fun at him, he was there to make another joke. Everyone just needs to lighten up!
One time when i saw the show his clothes were on backwards, i thought it was kinda funny.
its just like if someone doesnt find toilet humor funny,
its all in prefence, so maybe everyone should just "lighten up" about telling people what they should think.
