I just bought a DVD at a video store in the mall called "Broadway Lost Treasures" which most of you know contain performances from past Tony Awards telecasts, and I was completely blown away by Barbara Harris's performance. She sang "I Want to be a Movie Star" and "Gorgeous" and I really want to know more about this show.
I have a question for those of you who have this DVD. Did Barbara Harris lip synch her final high note in "Gorgeous"? I mean it seemed to have come from no where.

It was actually part of the show -- the note was lip-synched on stage as well.
Encores is doing the show this year with Kristen Chenoweth (though there are rumors she may drop out because of her West Wing commitments). It's an evening of three one act musicals, each written in a different style, by the same composing team behind "Fiddler on the Roof."

Posted: 1/6/05 at 6:26pmAh, thank you Margo. I hope Chenoweth doesn't drop out because I think doing the Apple Tree would be more rewarding than her tiny role on the West Wing. I really do wonder how Chenoweth will do in the role.

re: The Apple Tree#5
Posted: 1/6/05 at 6:35pmIt'd be a shame if she cancelled because she's the main reason they're doing it this year. They've wanted to do the show for years, but waited until a comedic actress of her caliber was available (these are a HARD roles to cast and to perform). If she can't do it, it won't be easy to replace her (not that she's irreplaceable or anything -- I like her, but I wouldn't call myself a fan -- but she has several qualities that would suit the roles quite well).

aaaahhh, The Apple Tree would be better to do than The West Wing anyway
Plus I've bought my tickets!! lol
re: The Apple Tree#7
Posted: 1/6/05 at 6:41pmAgain, it's JUST a rumor and very well may be completely false -- don't get upset, yet (I'm not sure why she should have to drop out anyway, West Wing or no West Wing -- Encores concerts are rehearsed and performed all within a single week; she wouldn't have to miss more than one episode).

Posted: 1/6/05 at 6:46pmI agree. When is the Encores concert? I'm sure all the West Wing episodes for the season would have all been filmed by March.

I highly doubt that she will cancel.
The season finale for The West Wing will air sometime at the end of March, so there is no way she will be filming in the spring.
I already have my tickets and am looking forward to this. I have been telling people that The Apple Tree was a very good choice for Encores! and that Kristin Chenoweth should play the three leading ladies, but never thought it'd ever actually happen.
Life hands you surprises!

I highly doubt that Chenoweth will drop the show, although I am a bit saddened that she's doing Encores!
In a reent interiew Miss Chenoweth said that she did On a Clear Day You Can See Forever because she knew that it'd be a while before she was back on the NY stage, so that was a quick, short and sweet farewell.
But I don't wanna have to wait for another five years for another musical starring Miss Chenoweth!
Hopefully she'll be back soon!

Looks like from this artivle on Zap2It.com that was published this morning she is still very much in the production.
"In May, Chenoweth returns to her Broadway roots for a short New York run in a concert staging of the musical "The Apple Tree," giving up what would have been a rare month of rest and relaxation.
"'My manager told me, "You will have exactly one month free, just finishing 'West Wing,' and I do not suggest that you do this," but I said, "Oh, I'm doin' it." 'I've always wanted to sing that piece.'"
