Barbra's "With One Look" is my favorite version of that song. I do not, however, think she would make a good Norma.
I know, Matty, I know. I would be there in a heart beat. And Dolly as Dolly - I want credit if they use that! Thanks.

Barbra was the first to release the songs WITH ONE LOOK and AS IF WE NEVER SAID GOODBYE, even earlier than the original London cast recording.
I wish she would reprise them - in the movie!
Barbra is my first choice as Norma ( can you just imagine her in the scene showing off her profile to the masseuses?) - she would be definitive and unless she reinterprets the songs in the inimitable Sreisand style, the ALW score would really sound grand. And who could be more diva-like than Babs?
Glenn and Meryl are both fine actresses - but they are not exactly the best singers. But they are both fine with me in the role of Norma, if any one of them is chosen.
If Hugh does get the role of Joe -- who do you think of these three would have the best chemistry with him?

I think Glenn and Hugh would have the best chemistry. Barbra would be next.

Meryl is an AMAZING singer, she is just as good as babs and better than glenn. Just listen to her in Postcards from The Edge.
Hmmmm. Meryl is quite possibly the best living actress, but I think we both know she can't compete vocally with Babs.
She would be a great Norma ( do not care for her personally) but doubt it would happen. Heard her do the 2 big Desmond solos on an album years ago. Her & Jackman a dream but will not happen tragically
I agree Matt. Meryl, a consummate actress, but vocally cannot compare to La Streisand.
I do wish ALW would put in Streisand's "Back to Broadway" album and listen to those songs again. I put that in when this thread was started and now I'm really upset that we won't see her do this.
calling ALW, calling ALW - get thee to a record store and get that album...
yeah..and we know successful his other movies have been..yuk yuk

I was being sarcastic about Barbra being too young. She has a habit of seeing herself perpetually as 28 and dismissing any age-appropriate role as being "Too old" for her to play (Most recently in regards to Mame).
I've got a question? What about casting someone (either from Broadway or movie musicals) who's considered washed up, or has been out of the spotlight for years. Remember, Gloria Swanson wasn't BIG anymore, by any stretch of the imagination.
I know they would never cast anyone but a bona fide star, but I'm certain there are interesting choices beyond the obvious.

Personally, I can't stand Barbra but I can see her as Norma.
