re: The British Musical

Very depressing, by the time the Olivers come round one of those will not be here and Jersey looks to be on its last legs......always maintained Gone with the Wind should be in there.

'Jersey Boys' is bringing in one of the healthiest box offices at the moment. It will around for some time yet.

re: The British Musical

Have there been many jukebox musicals since Jersey Boys opened in '05? My feeling is that Jersey Boys may have killed that genre by being good and too hard to follow.

Yes - wouldn't it be great if there were no more jukebox musicals! Though I must say I enjoyed Jersey Boys, I generally detest the whole concept of the jukebox musical. I think their kind of "easy buck" attraction to producers is the biggest threat to the development of new musical theatre work. Unfortunately with the huge box office success of the Mamma Mia movie to "inspire" them (I hated that show with a vengeance btw!!!), I think producers will already be lining up all kinds of ludicrous jukebox options.

'The Thorn Birds' is just around the corner and most people smell a bit of a biggish hit here with this new British musical.

If that was true, then Our House would marked the end of the trend re: The British Musical Now THAT was a true British musical.

Yes, Mama - and a world premiere at the Swansea Grand theatre in April! I've already booked my ticket for opening night. Really looking forward to it, especially with Helen Anker in the lead.

Though I'm not sure it's really a "British" musical. It's a British production (directed by Michael Bogdanov) but the book & lyrics are by the Australian Colleen McCulloch (who wrote the original novel) and the music is by a German opera star, Gloria Bruni. But at least it's a genuine Book musical with an original score.

I hope that, as a musical based on a blockbuster bestselling novel, it turns out better than last year's musical based on a blockbuster bestselling novel staged at the New London.

re: The British Musical

With the original novellist on board for book and lyrics its likely that it could go either way - turn out brilliant because she's allowed the perfect adaptation, or turned out drab and boring because she's not let a single detail slip.
