re: The Broadway 'Hilarious Comments by Tourists' Thread

There was an hilarious girl working in the box office of the Prince Of Wales Theatre back in the 80s. What with the theatres location there was an endless stream of tourists popping into ask directions and all kinds of things. her favorite was when Americans would come in and ask for 'Ly-sester Sq'! If they pronounced it properly they got the correct directions just one block away from the theatre- if they pronounced it Ly-sester they were sent in the direction of Regent Street and beyond with a baffling number of left and right turns never to be seen again! She could do this with a dead pan face while all the others hid out of sight in hysterics! This was always triggered off due to the fact that there was never ever a 'please' or 'thank you' in any of the requests!

I had a friend who lived in London for a few years. She and I always had the sam problem with tourists in both places. They would ask where a landmark is (Radio City, Madison Square Garden etc) and lo and behold 9 out of 10 times they were within eyesight of it. and we would point to it because it is right there. The follow up question would be how do you get there. Should we take the subway/tube?

If you can see a building from where your standing chances are you can walk there in less then ten feet.

As a non British non American tourist to both the west end and broadway regularly I absolutely love that thread.....I admit to not understanding some of them but a lot of them are laugh out loud funny. Also like both boards....its remarkable how different they both are too :)

Yay, funny.

You know where the Hammerstmieth Appollo is.

Good on you.

Have you ever been to New York?

I know where the Hammersmeith Appollo is. (It's near Victoria Station. I stay at the 41 every time I'm in London).

Do you know where the Helen Hayes is?

Nope, Hammersmith Apollo is near Hammersmith station. The Apollo Victoria is by Victoria station. If I want to find a theatre I don't know I use google :)

I also love the hilarious comments thread, its got nothing to do with where you come from, I bet the people mentioned in the posts have exactly the same experiences in their hometowns. And I bet they laugh about it too.

re: The Broadway 'Hilarious Comments by Tourists' Thread

I know this thread was started as they found them annoying, but I just have these two re: The Broadway 'Hilarious Comments by Tourists' Thread
I once had to work in this really big restaurant (on the corner along from the lion king) and I had to stand outside and people kept asking me for directions so I gave them to them as they were very polite =) One American couple asked me where Buddy was so I gave them the directions, and they were absolutely adamant that I'd given them the wrong ones...I gave them the exact directions, (seriously, it's 2 minutes away from the restuarnt!) but they kept saying it wasn't there, and that I was a stupid girl, so I said fine, go your way, enjoy the show. The one thing I can do is direct people to theatres lol. That really annoyed me (but so did the place, it was creepy and I left after to days, the other person I was there with walked out on the 2nd)

The other one I thought was bad was when someone was clearly trying to show off to her friends about her theatre knowledge...I was in the toilets at the Adelphi, and the woman said "Oooooh yees, this is exactttly like the Theatre Royal Drury Lane..."
I then saw the show and the person behind me was wondering if Michael Quinn and Ray Quinn were the same person....

Sorry I'm done! re: The Broadway 'Hilarious Comments by Tourists' Thread

re: The Broadway 'Hilarious Comments by Tourists' Thread

I was at the stage door of The Helen Hays after a performance of Xanadu. One guy there was trying to show off his knowledge of the theatres around him (or lack thereof). He pointed to The Majestic and said that that was the second theatre that Phantom played in. And, he pointed to The Shubert and said that that was where they filmed the A Chorus Line. I laughed about the Majestic comment but I kindly corrected him about the Shubert Being used as the set for A Chorus Line. I said to him that the original production played there but the movie was filmed in the church next to The Gershwin that used to be a Broadway theatre. He said that there was no possible way that I was right because that place is a Church. And, that they could never have filmed A Chorus Line in a church.

I scratched my head and wondered what part of "used to be a theatre" he didn't understand.
