Okay, is it just me (and everyone else I've mentioned this to), but does the beginning and end of the overture for THE COLOR PURPLE sound like something they play as the winner of an award is walking towards the stage to accept their Daytime Emmy award or something?

Yes, I noticed that. It's a fun overture, but its not very good.
Which overture are we talking about?
Yes, it does sound like that a lot. But than it segs quickly into WHAT ABOUT LOVE?
But in a way, that makes sense. The music that is played comes from the end of the act, when Nettie returns. If you see where my corny path is leading...
I am happy they added the overture, I enjoy it. It gives the music a raw sound compared to what is ACTUALLY played. I feel, though, they should have left some things out - like the underscoring from when Mister and Harpo talk (after Shug's arrival).
I like the daytime emmys, so i like the overture. bite me.
I didn't say it's a bad overture. I enjoy most of the music from THE COLOR PURPLE.
BSO - I'm talking about the WHAT ABOUT LOVE and THE COLOR PURPLE themes that they play. Not the first few seconds of the overture...when they go into those two songs.
Now I am completely lost.
But, I think the very beginning sounds like the emmy awards...

That's because the score is completely generic.

You're lost? When they play "What About Love" and then after "Push Da Button" turns into "The Color Purple" theme. The very slow, grand, plodding-ness of it.
Yes. You think that all sounds like the Daytime Emmy theme?
No!
When a winner of an award (Oscar, GG, whatever) they play theme music from that show or movie. It sounds like some generic theme song. I used the daytime Emmy's as an example, because it awards soap operas and I thought it would be a nice, borderline-tacky example.
Alright. I got the CD so I listened again.
I see what you mean.
It does sound like that - like an awards ceremony.
Munk, I thought the exact same thing when I put the cd on this morning.
I LOVE the CD.
But, I have some issues with the sound. They cleaned up the overture a lot - it was raw in the theatre, and it was nice.
They also made OUR PRAYER more mystical than in the show.
Otherwise, I am loving the CD. And so much is included! I wish they included the lyrics.
The overture sounded "raw" in the theatre?
I think the CD sounds exactly like it did live.
When I first saw the show in previews, it didn't even have an overture. The second time, it sounded like they learned it that week.
P.S. I wish they kept in Sofia's march - which basically came right out of the book!

are you saying you liked it better "raw" like it went better w/ the rawness of the show?
It just didn't sound as genericly corny.
