for those in los angeles, did you catch this show?
so original, so hilarious.. i was literally astonished at the show.. i only went cause Sutton Foster is in it but the whole show became one of my all time favorites over night.
Numbers like "show off" and "cold feet" made my stand up at the end of the songs..
just a wonderful show.
is this going to broadway afterwards or what???
cause im moving to new york in august so i want to see this show again there as well :]

Posted: 12/19/05 at 12:08amYes, we had a wonderful time, and I was surprised how much my brother (who is not particularly a musical theatre person) and my grandmother (who doesn't speak English that well) enjoyed it. They both thought it was the most hilarious thing they had ever seen and were cracking up during the entire thing.

I also loved The Drowsy Chaperone and laughed hysterically through a lot of it.
I have to say that I have some doubts about how it will play on Broadway. I would think it plays best to people who enjoy old-school musicals and might not appeal to an audience weaned on recent Broadway productions. However, everyone I know who saw the show, including those who don't seem that into musical theater, absolutely loved it. So I hope my doubts will be assuaged when it transfers.
My only criticism of the show is that I thought the final number fell a little flat and was disappointed in Kecia Lewis-Evans, whose voice didn't seem strong enough for The Aviatrix. They really need someone who can belt that number.

Posted: 12/19/05 at 12:31amI wonder if you saw Keshia on an off-night? She was terrific when I saw the show. I left wishing she had had more to do.

Posted: 12/19/05 at 12:43pmI saw the show too and enjoyed very much. But I concur with jwsel that if this is going to be a hit on Broadway. Sure Sutton was great but she is not a "real" lead, this show is more like an ensemble show. I don't think the "intermission" scene was working well, it dragged a bit and didn't serve any purpose.

I saw the show just this Saturday. I purposely refused to read any reviews because I wanted to be surprised.
I had a great time at the show, it really is just an immensely fun and hilarious show. It doesn't take itself seriously and felt like a gift to those of us who love musical theatre. I thought everyone was excellent, including Troy Britton Johnshon whom I didn't care for at all when I saw him in the first "Hairspray" tour. I saw the Linda Griffin in the role of "Trix" and she was fabulous. Sutton, her wrist brace and all, were outstanding as usual. Her one handed cart wheels, crazy fast costume changes, and hilarious songs were amazing.
As for Broadway: at the stage door I overheard Jason Kravits (Gangster #1) saying that its probably not going to transfer for a little while because as of now they don't have a backer. So, I hope all goes well with that. I do think that the show has some pacing issues that need to be worked out between LA and Broadway. (Also, I think that Georgia Engel is extremely underused.)
Anyways, the show is wonderful. The cast is brilliant and I think the show will be huge. :)
(And for those who care about the stage door I met Sutton, Georgia, Beth Leavel, Bob Martin, and Jennifer Smith. All were very gracious and when I was taking my picture with Sutton., she turned to me and said “I’ve met you before!” Made my night!)

Posted: 12/19/05 at 1:13pmI don't think the move to Broadway is about backers, From what I hear, they have more than enough financing in place. Its about theater availability and a house opening up that can accomodate the show. Anyway, I loved the show and thought everyone was excellent. BTW, I thought Troy Britton Johnson was great in "Hairspray" when It played LA and actually thought he was one of the better things about the show. Ah well..difference of opinion.

Sorry, I must of misheard him about the B'way transfer.
As for Troy, I remember not enjoying him or Austin Miller.I remember why I didn't enjoy Austin Miller, but I don't remember why I didn't care for Troy. I couldn't believe that I didn't enjoy him in Hairspray after seeing him in The Drowsy Chaperone. He was great and is such a talented dancer. "Cold Feet" was for sure a highlight. And for those who have seen it, the skates! It made me so nervous! haha! :)

I saw it and had a blast.
When I went to the stage door, Sutton Foster did say it was going to NY.
Only a few folks there waiting and she signed and was very sweet.
This was just so much silly fun.
Me loves Adolpho!

I went for my final time last night (I love this show!!), and did the stage door thing. Sutton was beyond kind, as was the rest of the cast! I commented to several members I hoped to see them on Broadway in May when I go back to NY to visit, and everyone seemed sure they would be in a theater by then.
So New York...treat this show kindly. I'm sure you will love the cleverness and surprises this show holds in store for you. Enjoy the good-hearted enthusiasm and the pure love of Broadway that The Man in the Chair shares with the audience. It's a charming and memorable musical, and I can hardly wait for the cast recording to come out! Enjoy!!!
