Show business is an odd business, in that many of the comedy performers on television today or in the movies are the lesser talented people. In my humble opinion, except for a few shows like Jerry Seinfeld or Larry David, most television shows and movies, feature performers who would never make it thru serious, intensive auditions, which evaluate acting talent, craftmanship, command of the stage, etc. Me personally? I can't watch SNL anymore because the show features such amateurish performers. The worst of the SNL amateurs is Adam Sandler, King of the one weekender fart movies. His grossout, trash movies denegrate the industry, making a mockery of the hard work and good intentions put forth over generations by real comedy artists, who made the film comedy industry a respectable profession.
Speaking as a Director and writer who has auditioned and evaluated at least 1500 comedy performers over the last 6 years for various comedy projects, I will offer my opinion as to the top 3 talented, but unknown women in comedy in the USA. Keep in mind I live and work in the comedy capital of the USA, Chicago, Il. Performers come to Chicago from all over the nation to start their comedy careers.
Before I state my opinion, I wish to emphasize that there are many talented women in comedy in Chicago. I just want to mention the three who knock me out when they take the stage:
1. AMANDA SEARS: Loads and loads of talent. Easily as talented as Carol Burnett. See her on the Net in numerous sketches such as "Annie's Craving for Rough Sex" and "Hanna the Dancing Kosher Comedianne." Her performance in "Rough Sex" is one of the most popular on the Internet, 405,000 hits and still going strong. The comedy sketch could very well be THE most popular for performers unknown to national audiences. Her co-star is Andrew Pond.
Amanda is also a professional artist and distinguished graduate of Indiana University (or Indiana State).
2. AMANDA BLAKE DAVIS: Tremendous versatility. Very talented. Works currently for Second City. Received her acting degree from Providence University.
3. BROOKE BAGNALL: I believe she also works for Second City. Very talented. See her do Cher on the Net. Brooke earned her acting degree from Washington University.
I also like LAURA PICHE: Cute, funny, lots of energy in front of the camera. She's very photogenic. See her in "Hanna, the Dancing Kosher Comedienne" on the Net. She's funny.
Finding talented performers is work, real hard work, exhausting work. If people in power in show business put out this kind of work, maybe the public would get the opportunity to see truly talented comedy performers instead of the mediocrity that's dished up on television and in the movies.
In another posting, I'll mention my selection for the top 3 or 4 unkown male comedy performers.
