I actually was in the musical version of the show a couple years ago. I really like it and would love to see it revived.
I'm so glad you found this movie. I saw in when it first came out- so I'm dating myself. It's one of my favorites! It always makes me smile. Dreyfus was perfect for the part- he was so annoying in such an endearing way. Loved his "gay" Richard III. Marsha Mason was so believable. Quinn Cummings was nominated for an Oscar. Saw her recently on a show- she makes baby carrier things- forgot the name of them. She still looks the same- just older. Recently did a TV version with Patricia Heaton- not as good as the movie but still made me smile. It was good to see Patricia in something other than Debra Barone- she was very endearing also.

The long and short of it was that the adaptation was just not that good. Even with Bernadette Peters and Martin Short (his B'way debut) at the top of their game, it barely managed a 6-month run (closed at the end of the two stars' contracts). No Tony nominations for book or score. Score went to SPIDER WOMAN, with noms for THE WHO'S TOMMY, THE SONG OF JACBO ZULU (?), and ANNA KARENINA. Book was the same, except BLOOD BROTHERS was nommed instead of ZULU.
Still, the score does have a few good songs. "Elliot Garfield Grant" and "No More" are both really wonderful numbers. And the CD is worth it to hear both of their performances. It's a shame the material (overall) was not better.
ETA: It was, however, nommed for Best Musical, probably so Bernadette and Martin could perform, which they did--"Paula." ZULU and ANNA were the two show shut out of this category.
