That's right, musicals based on biblical stories.
I am just wanting to compile a list of musicals that where based on biblical stories, stage, screen or whatnot. Whether it be from Exodus ("The Prince of Egypt"), the New Testiment ("Jesus Christ Superstar"), or heck, other religious texts out there (after all, I did see "I, Nephi" based on the first two books in the Book of Mormon).
Even if the musical 'was inspired' by certain parts of the Bible (ie, the plot lifted straight from it and names etc where changed), they are defiantely ones to put on the list.
So Biblical Musicals anyone?

Richard Rodgers' Two By Two (1970) was based on Clifford Odets' play The Flowering Peach, which tells the story of Noah.

"Godspell," and "Children of Eden," and ALW's "Joseph" all immediately spring to mind.

If 10 Commandments had been directed for the stage by DeMille, the sea would actually have parted & the theater would have been flooded for every show. Just because DeMille has been dead for years does not mean he could not have done a better job than the person who directed the LA show
There was a musical version of Ben Hur that had its own website years ago but nothing ever came of it
I think Solomon & Sheba would make a great trashy musical with music by Wildhorn

What was the Maury Yeston musical that "New Words" comes from?
Was it called "1,2,3,4,5"?
There was an Italian musical called BEYOND THE RAINBOW about Noah's Ark. It was also produced in the West End.
There was an Australian musical of the life of Christ called MAN OF SORROWS (originally titled JESUS CHRIST REVOLUTION).

Maury Yeston's musical was called 'In the Beginning', Wildcat.
Musicals with religious undertones:
-'Caroline, or Change'
-'Footloose'

Posted: 6/26/05 at 4:16pmActually Wildcat has a point with this title. At least in the Unsung Musicals 1 disc booklet it is referred to as being from a musical called "1,2,3,4,5". But I suppose, the show's name has been changed a few times as nowaways most shows experience it.
