The Highest Yellow concerned the true story of artist Vincent Van Gough while in a mental hospital.
Saw this at the Signature in Arlington, VA and really enjoyed it.
Has more of a regional future than Broadway.

LaChiusa has said he has no plans (at least when SWIWS came out) to bring this to Broadway.

Maybe, if BA is successful, he will change his mind.
But I am sure he has plenty of other things he would like to work on - including Audra's one-act musical opening in a few months, I think.

The show was more or less about Van Gogh, or rather the relationship between his physician and the prostitute (for whom he cut off his ear).

It starred Jason Daniely, Marc Kudisch (Van Gogh), and Judy Kuhn.

The school has some beautiful arias and what not - featuring the title song being sung by Van Gogh naked in the bathtub.

I think it was a bit out of Marc's range, at some points.

It was very careful about not becoming the next "SUNDAY IN THE PARK," such as MARIE CHRISTINE was compared to Sweeney (unfairly...).

But, no, THY focused more on Van Gogh's physician, taking care of a mentally and physically wounded artist.

Van Gogh, of course, did some nice work with his year to give it as a gift to the prostitute, who was in love with him and his work. The physician ends up falling for her, as well...something that affects his treatment of Van Gogh.

The Highest Yellow refers to the stage of Van Gogh's work and him trying to escape into the color.

You can hear the title song on Marc Kudisch's site.

It's beautiful, of course!

I made the trip to Virginia to see it and I absolutely adored it. I honestly think it is LaChiusa's most accomplished scores. Several truly beautiful songs, and amazing performances by all (especially Judy Kuhn, who never sounded better).
