The Importance of Being Earnest

As anyone else seen this show? It is by Ocsar Wilde who also wrote Salome. I just saw it today at a local outdoor theatre associated with Kent State University and it was ok. The 2nd and 3rd acts were hilarious. The 1st act sucked. I guess it was just one of those acts that is used to get you to understand the concept of the play. If you have seen it I would like to hear your oppinion!

The first act is usually full of EXPOSITION. The manner in which it is presented can either make or break a production.

BTW: In my college days I starred as Algernon in this play. I was marvelous. I'll show you my clippings.

In England this show is often performed and had a major West End revival about 2 years ago with a famous TV actress called Patricia Roultridge.

I like it a lot and the film was also quite good, though not as good as the stage version.

EARNEST is a classic comedy in the canon of Western theatre. In my opinion I would recommend everyone to see the film version staring Michael Redgrave (Vanessa's father) and Dame Edith Evans (not Dame Edna). This has been recently released on VHS and DVD in a glorious color print. This EARNEST sparkles and it the standard by which any EARNEST is measured. It NOT to be confused with the recent film version which is not in the same league. Remember--stay away from the cucumber sandwiches, those are for Aunt Augusta!

I saw the production at the Haymarket with Patricia Routledge a couple of years ago. Patricia may be known to some of you as Mrs. Bucket ("it's bou-quet") on "Keeping UP Appearances." To a few others she is known as the female lead, starring opposite Vincent Price, in Jule Styne's Broadway musical DARLING OF THE DAY.

There is a contemporary telling currently on the boards in NYC in production by the Aquila Theatre. I thought it looked interesting but the reviews are beginning to change my mind. The NYTimes was especially unkind. Oh well.

Yours for a better Broadway!

Hey Dolly, in my college days I starred as Uncle Jack and I, too was wonderful. And I would love to show my clippings.

BTW, Does everyone know that in Wilde's day, to be earnest had a totally different meaning?
