I really enjoy his take on Sondheim shows. I really want to see his "Merrily We Roll Along." I think that show would align itself better with his "Actors as musicians" concept.

John Doyle's work changed the way I look at musical theater. Completely and unequivocally rocked my world. I learned more sitting in the O'Neill and the Barrymore than I have and potentially ever will sitting in a class. I think he is a genius, and I really applaud his intentions to get back to the pure basics of the theater. I can't say enough for how much I love his work, and I am endlessly proud to support it.
It saddens me that it's probably only a matter of time before this thread devolves into being flooded with argumentative comments about what a gimimick he is.

Mm, now that I'm thinking about it I have every inclination to ditch the essay I'm working on and go watch my tape of 'Great Performances'!

I love John Doyle. Seriously, just... just put the actor-musician thing aside for a second. Look at the actors. Look at the brilliant performances they're giving. Look at how well they're working together. Look at the show as a whole. Doyle is a BRILLIANT director, and I get very upset that people choose to ignore that in favour of going "oh noes, not another actor-musician show!!!111!111!!!". Bite me, 'kay? ^_^
