"The Last Midnight" staging question

In the film and Central Park versions of INTO THE WOODS, when the Witch starts throwing the beans during "The Last Midnight", are the other characters in the scene scrambling to get them so another beanstalk won't grow in the woods or do they want them for another purpose? Call me dumb, but I'm kinda unclear on that.

Yes, I think that they are scrambling to prevent another beanstalk growing again, that is shown clearly in the movie but it's rather ambiguous in the OBC and 2012 Recordings.
