The Last Starfighter: A New Musical
I can't wait I'm seeing it on sat!

I can't wait to see this! I loved the movie when it came out, the geek that I am. All they need to do next is turn Willow or Flight of the Navigator into a musical and I'd be one happy wolf! I would have said The Goonies too, but they, sort of, tried that at the Fringe Fest this year.
I wish I could see it! I loved the movie when it came out.
Thanks for that review
I really wish I was in NY to see this. Charlie Pollock who is playing Alex is a favorite of mine. I saw him play Judas in JCS this summer out here in CA and he was fantastic. He also played Bobby in the national tour of Urinetown. For those of you who are going, I'd love to hear your reviews of the show.
Ok, so I saw the show sat night and it was definitely a lot of fun, very cheesy but a lot of fun! The show was sold out on sat with about 20 people on a waiting list. The producer found about 10 folding chairs and placed them in front of the seats on the stage to accomodate more people. He was extremely excited that the show was that sold out.
The cast was amazing. Probably the best cast in an off off broadway show! The singing, acting, and dancing (yes a minor amount) was all great. The music surprised me and was very enjoyable. The orchestrations were very simple since it was only a piano playing throughout most of the show.
The sets are very very simplistic but versatile. A picnic table seems to be used the most as a table, a bed, a space ship, and a car, which actually seems to work well.
The lighting is the only "special" effect at all. There are three disco balls which rotate in different directions giving the feel of flying through space.
The book, well its the book from the movie. The seem to focus on the cheesy aspects of the movie more then anything. When the play tries to get more sentimental it is still on the corny side.
If you are a fan of the movie, or of corny sci fi musicals I would defintiely recommend the show. It achieves everything that it set out to do. It thouroughly entertained the audience and is an extremely FUN low budget show.
For anyone who's interested in how the musical book differs from the movie, here's an unofficial weblog review that includes a discussion about the changes made from the screenplay to the book of the musical.

Thanks milla
Who ever wrote that review was very accurate in their assement of the show. But I feel they missed the fact the musical brought out a bit of the corniness of the show.
