Could it work if it was shot in Italy with with John Stamos as Giuseppe, Kristin Bell as Clara, and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Margaret or Franca?
Actually, a film script is currently being developed but its based soley on the original novel, not the musical (though I'm sure the interest in the musical is what prompted the interest in the remake.)

Cool, but they should at least add that overture from the CD, if not the whole score.
John Stamos is in his 40's.
EDIT: Never mind. I was thinking you meant for John to play Fabrizio. :)

I really don't think this would be a good movie. Besides, I'll stick with my tape of the Lincoln Center broadcast. Thank God for that!!
They should at least do what they did with the "Fanny" and "Irma La Douce" films and use Guettel's beautiful music for the remake's instrumental score.
I agree with best12bars.
I do not see Piazza working on film as a musical. Heck, I don't even see it being successful as a non-musical. But if it were to be made into film again, I think Guettel providing the score would be beyond appropriate.
All around I don't think it is a very good idea, and I don't think it will end up happening. But you never know!
What I am really interested in is the "in the works" Floyd Collins film that Adam talked about in an interview a few years back. My guess is we will never see that coming soon to a theatre near us.

Neddy was referring to the misspelling in title of this thread.
Such a boring show, why try to bore movie audiences?
