re: The Light in the Piazza - 1st preview

Kelli's got the hardest shot at getting a nomination, much less a win. She has Sara Ramirez (the winner in my book), Maureen McGovern (unless they make her a lead since that category is SLIM pickings this year), at least two of the women from Spelling Bee (Celia Keenan-Bolger for sure and possibly Lisa Howard), and Sara Gettelfinger. Victoria's road is far easier, mostly only going through Scott and Foster (Scott's role is so underwritten that there's little she could do to make it Tony-worthy).
Matthew is, I would say, a lock for a nom if not a win.

I"m fairly sure this will be Norbert's year to win for best actor. I'd love to see Kelli get a nod...although Maureen and Celia's work is FAR superior to hers...she still deserves a nod...cause she's paid her dues. She'll have to do something bigger if she wants to win one.

previous topics about the tonys have suggested Matt would fall into the featured category, im not sure if thats right or not. i thought he was a lead, but there are so many men this year- especially with a show like spamalot. the tony people are gonna have to make some decisions.

re: The Light in the Piazza - 1st preview

I"d say all the boys but tim will be put into supporting consideration. i think matt is clearly a lead. id say all the folks in spelling bee are supporting. id also say that sherie will be put into lead, although, i think that is a mistake.

lead men:
tim curry
norbert
matt m
john l
(my outside pick) gary beach

lead women:
sherie
eden
sutton
victoria
jen gamb

supporting men:
jesse tyler
dan fogler
hank azaria
david hyde
gavin creel

supporting women:
kelli o (for piazza, not dracula)
maureen mcgov
joanna gleason
Celia Keenan-Bolger
Sara Ramirez

those are my predicts as of right now...who knows...some of them could stop showing up to perform, and their chances would die...i dunno.

re: The Light in the Piazza - 1st preview

I am really glad the very early buzz seems positive for the show ! And i am thrilled that Matt ROCKS on the role and there's talk about TONY for him, a nomination would be a great appreciation for this truly amazing performer and a win would be fantastic !!!! On the other hand I was soooo looking forward to Mistress's review, but I fullyrespect her decision and will wait. Thank you bwaysinger !

Take care

re: The Light in the Piazza - 1st preview

no one answered my question about sitting closer or farther? though i think from mistress's last comment that closer would be better...

re: The Light in the Piazza - 1st preview

sorry, i missed your question!

I sat last row of the orchestra and saw pretty well, the distance wasnt a problem, since the orchestra only goes to row P. I wouldnt sit too far on the sides tho, I did miss a bit of the sets (clara sits on something in the background in one scene & I couldnt see her) because I was on a sharp angle, but none of the major action happens back there anyway.

re: The Light in the Piazza - 1st preview

I think Matthew is going to get thrown into the featured category, as will Kelli. They're clearly "leads" in the most basic sense but I think they're going to push for Victoria as the sole lead from the show and put everyone else into featured category.
And, not to turn this into a Tony predicting thread, but I really think it's going to be
Actor: Norbert
Actress: Victoria
Feat. Actor: Dan Fogler
Feat Actress: Sara Ramirez
And I think I mentioned before that I feel Bee, Piazza and Spamalot are going to split the main three (Book to Bee, Score to Piazza and Musical to Spamalot).

i was sad to see an older version of the poster enlarged outside the theater, as opposed to the news ones where fabrizio is made to look like matt, i hope they change that. they did have the new version on sale.

re: The Light in the Piazza - 1st preview

Hmm, I've been hearing some bad things about Matt. I didn't think he was very ideal for the role and my friends who have seen it agree with me. That doesn't seem to be the situation on the boards though. Interesting...

Kelli and Matt will both be considered featured, I would assume. It's like Gypsy. While the roles ARE leads, the show belongs to Victoria, and she will win the Tony no matter what.

Here's who will win:

Musical - Spamalot
Score - Light in the Piazza
Book - Spelling Bee
Actor - Norbert Leo Butz
Actress - Victoria Clark
Featured Actor - Dan Fogler
Featured Actress - Sara Ramirez

Oh, and when Piazza was in Seattle it was at the VERY intimate INTIMAN Theatre Company and there was no ensemble. It was only a cast of 10 or less, if I'm remembering correctly.

Ok..so Matt M. opens his shirt. Does Michael Berresse repeat a tradition of virtually every show he's been in on Broadway and show off that magnificent chest of his? Ohh Laa Laa..
