Ok, I just came back from seeing the Lion King on tour. This was my second time seeing tbe show. I still don't understand the continuing appeal of this show.
I was really disappointed with most of the cast's acting (or lack thereof). But then again, what's there to act for most of the show with a weak plot and cheesy lines? The lines seemed so forced that it came out artificial. The show's book and music definitely work better as an animated film than on stage. I honestly think I cried more watching the movie than watching the stage show. How can that be? I'm usually such a sentimental nut when it comes to emotional scenes in live theatre.
Granted there are some redeeming qualities. The costumes, puppets, sets, and Julie Taymor's overall vision is incredible. And it is nice to have a show to bring the entire family to and get kids involved in musical theatre.
I went his performance hoping to change my impression of TLK, but flaws of the show was obvious once again. So, I don't think I'll be running to the box office anytime soon to get tix for this show, unless I'm bringing little ones with me.

How was the singing? That was one of the main reasons I wanted to see the show.

I thought the cast didn't have the best singing. The LA company did better. If I had to choose, the standouts of the show were Thandazil Soni (Rafiki) and Derek Hasenstab (Zazu).
There could have been two reasons why the vocals weren't top-notch last night though: 1) because there were weak singers or 2) there was something wrong with the sound system and the orchestrations drowned out the singers. I could see how both were possibilities.

The actor playing Rafiki always seems to stand out. They know how to cast that role, but god forbid them cast Nala right so we can hear a good "Shadowlands"! Besides Heather Headly! Has anyone sung that song as well as her?
