Posted: 8/13/04 at 10:21amI saw it last night too- it was kick butt awesome! I absolutley love tap and I was Ethel in the show afew months ago, so I was really excited for the show- but it was even better than I expected. The teen chorus got to do a lot of great dancing (something I notice- I am in the kid chorus there), which is unusual for a Muny show. However, I thought in some places (ex: We're in the Money) that the choreagraphy wasn't enough hard tap- too fluffy. Just some of my thoughts...

Posted: 8/13/04 at 4:04pmit was called the Muny Opera back in the day, perhaps when the shows were actualy good..... but I do love how people in St. Louis refer to it as "the opera" just to show how un-cultured the city actually is. Apparently an outdoor theatre that does cheesy musicals is an opera. God I hate that place!

Only someone who is actually from St. Louis would say that they're hoosiers. The rest of the counrty doesn't use it as a derogatory word the way we do. You can't escape your true St. Louis nature!!! Try if you like but it'll always be there lurking inside you .....
I'm glad I don't live there anymore ... but I certainly still like the people. Even some of the people who go to the "opera"! Though they're theatre taste does suck!

Just in case anyone was wondering where Beth Leavel is... she is playing Dorothy in this production... alongside Mark Jacoby as Julian Marsh... other big time performers at the MUNY this summer:
Jeff McCarthy, Catherine Brunell, Stacey Logan and Bruce Adler in GUYS AND DOLLS
Ruth Williamson in ANNIE and MUSIC MAN
Emily Skinner and Lauren Kennedy in BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S

Think before you generalize, bronxboundexpress. I'm from the STL area, and I am NOT a "hoosier" as you put it. In fact, I consider myself a decently cultured theatre fan.
However, I do agree with you--to a point--about the MUNY. There have been many FLAWED artistic decisions and gross gimmicks put forth in past seasons [I shamelessly blame everything on Paul Blake], but sometimes the theatre gets a show right. It's not 100% crap. For that fact, I haven't stopped patronizing it once or twice a St. Louis summer.
Oh, and about it being "the opera"... The MUNY started out as a company that produced both Grand Opera and Light Operetta from the early 20s into the late 50s before musical theatre became a staple. That's why you'll hear a lot of older area citizens refer to it as "the opera." It is a misnomer, but does that make people there uncultured? Misinformed? Yes. Uncultured? No. At least they are patronizing the place--as horribly flawed as it is. It is disheartening to see less youth participation in theatre in general, and the MUNY is no exception.
And as for CATS and its "stolen" choreography: Stop the ****ing whining already. It's over and done. Who doesn't steal from time to time? I admit that it's not always the best option, but CATS is a big product with much expectations attached to it. If you don't like it, don't patronize it.
